Well done video. Very easy to follow. I used to help my grandpa make this soap. We made Big batches. Used a huge cast iron cauldron on chains out back over a wood fire. He had a lot of folks saving lard for him. He was a mechanical wizard in the cotton mills of Carolina for 50 years. His work clothes were always oily. He actually made a liquid form of this and used it as a detergent. It got almost anything out. Put shout to shame. LOL! TY for sharing. Brought back wonderful memories :-)

Ladyshystar That is so cool, now I want a giant cast iron cauldron! My next experiment will be to actually make the lye from wood ash. Video on that coming in the sometime distant future....

I happen to have a cast iron cauldron sitting on my front porch. We keep kindling wood in it now. Needs a bit of welding to fix a loop. Yet, if I had to use it, I could. As for rendering natural lye, grandad did that too. He had a burn barrel he used. We got the hard woods from his brother's farm. This stuff isn't rocket science, just COMMON Sense which requires a bit of patience. :-) Looking forward to your rendering vid.

I used lye soap in 1967 when I was a freshman in highschool. I worked for a tobacco farmer during the summer and got covered in tobacco sap. The soap dissolved the heavy sap like it was nothing. I watched him make the soap from lard he had rendered in a huge cast iron pot on an open fire in the yard. I collect bacon fat from breakfasts and just recently thought about using it for soap. I appreciate the Bible verse at the end of your video. As the Sword of the Spirit it is our only offensive weapon included in the list of the armor of God. Defensive armor is of limited usefulness if we don't have and know how to use a weapon with which to counterattack the enemy. I look forward to more of your videos. Have a Christ-filled Christmas!

@SSL Family Dad: Thanks for sharing your recipe. I’ve never made soap from bacon drippings, although I have made other kinds. I figure I can return the favour a little bit, by sharing an idea that Julie Parker had, Which will save you some time and energy for clarifying your drippings: if you melt them in the sauce pan, and pour them through a metal sieve, into a clean, warm jar (warm enough to protect the jar from breaking when the hot oil goes in there), Then you add a little bit of water to the jar and put the cap on it snuggly. Flip it upside down, and leave it to cool. When the fats are solid, then you can right your upside-down jar and remove the cap. The water will pour off, along with the impurities. If the fat is firm enough, it’s possible to just reach the top off with water, and you’re done. It’s possible that you’ll have to do this twice, but unlikely you’ll have to do it three times. for that matter, if you end up having to do it twice, you might as well throw a coffee filter into yourself, to make a really good job of it and it sure that you won’t have to do it a third time. I’ve haven’t had to use a coffee filter when I tried it. I like what you have done with your moulding process. I don’t know if this will be useful to you or not, but I’ll offer it up: traditionally, I save 1 L/1 quart milk or cream or juice cartons; it’s pretty easy to take a little bit of wax paper or a paper or plastic bag that’s really small, I just raised the insides of those empty, clean cartons With lard, tallow, vegetable oil. You can close the top of the carton back up to hold the heat in there a little longer, as it seems to give a better saponification process. it occurs to me that you could actually do that to put inside of your jig, so that you have perfect sides, and the top of your soap is not exposed.
@benchkey9 жыл бұрын
Appreciated the video. When making a wooden mold, try giving a slight slant to the sides and ends, and just before pouring line the mold with baking parchment paper. It will all slip out lickity-split.. I use my bacon fat for frying and in the dogs food, gives them a nice coat. However pig fat makes excellent, very hard, soap. Today I made beef tallow soap, will use that to harden biodiesel glycerin into nice soap bars. Great stuff. (Biodiesel glycerin is a waste product of making biodiesel. ) Important to learn to use waste products instead of sending them down the drain or to landfills.

That is an excellent idea, thank you so much. I am very interested in making biodiesel as well, thanks again for the info

Super cool seeing even the work arounds you came up with when the soap was not easily removed from the mold. Pork or hamburger lard is likely what most people will be using to make soap if the grid ever goes down long-term. Seeing the texture of this soap versus others that use expensive ingredients from the lye to the oils, was also good too. This soap is flakier. Wonder if using more fat than the program called for would have made it more moist. Regardless, this is super good information. Having at least some idea of how much lard vs lye to use will be good to remember if the grid goes down long enough for people to run out of soap for cleaning dishes, clothes, and themselves. Thanks and God bless you for blessing me with this video.

@DaveBowman345: Pretty much any scent that’s in anything you use and soap saponifies out. That’s why we wait until trace before adding any essential oils, if it’s desirable to smell them. The therapeutic properties aside from being able to smell them would still be there, though, if they were to be added any earlier.

Sooo many questions lol. Ok first, you want to render that grease wayyy more or it will smell heavily like bacon grease and as YALL saw, there will be bits in it. Then there’s the fact that he added food coloring. Noooooo. It can bleed out and stain you. Then there’s the fragrance. Y’all please research your fragrances and make sure you have one that will react well to soap because it looked like his riced and he just didn’t gaf and still poured it into an unlined mold. That made me cringe. So much. Yes he made soap. But it could have been wayyyy better and I feel like he should have tried to do more research and be more informative about the entire project so that those watching and attempting this will have awesome successful batches of soap. I’m not trying to be rude or anything but this was a very crude and informative video. Also for those who are shocked about using bacon grease for soap... It’s an oil yall. Soap is made of fat/oil mixed with a lye water solution until the chemical reaction soaponification happens.

Interesting, but I can't help but wonder how useful/cost effective this really is when costs for your time are taken into account. I use bacon grease to season and coat the cast iron cookware that I use on a daily basis, so that doesn't go to waste.

@SSLFamilyDad9 жыл бұрын
+BobMuhKnob Well, you kind of opened yourself up to the bible lesson so here it is - In the old testament God gave many laws to the Israelites. These laws were specifically for them at that time in history and before Christ came into the world. Although many Christians like to follow some of these laws they are not commanded by God for us to follow. Only the Jewish faith recognizes these old testament laws as being required for their salvation. When Christ came into the world and died for our sins a new covenant was made with his blood. No longer were we to sacrifice animals and other old testament rules and rituals. That includes the rules about eating certain foods and animals. You make a good point about that being stated in the bible but those laws are no longer meant for us as believers in Christ. Thanks for the comment and I hope I didn't offend you in any way, just wanted to clarify. Romans 7:6 - But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.
@BobMuhKnob9 жыл бұрын
+SSLFamilyDad Cool story! Guess the ten commandments, and everything else in the old testament (3/4 or the bible) can be deleted, then. Might want to reread the bible, bud. You aren't allowed to ignore the old testament laws. Nothing in the bible says that. And you talk about Jews like they're old has beens. They spawned christians. Christianity is nothing but a Jewish sect based off of old, middle eastern superstitious beliefs, which are further copied from religions thousands of years older than that. But nice try...
@lechatbotte.9 жыл бұрын
+BobMuhKnob Oh boy. God gave the instructions to the Israelites for two simple reasons the first being cleanliness. Most of the animals mentioned are not clean i.e. pigs and without refrigeration that would make them susceptible to diseases. The second it was a show of obedience. It was a law regarding food NOT regarding salvation. So since it was regarding food we must keep it in that context. You want to keep Kosher fine do so, however it is NOT required for our salvation.
