Spelling of Thai words in English is ambiguous and there is little or no official standardization. Thai Holy Basil stir fry is commonly referred to as Pad Ka Prao, Pad Ka-Prao, Pad Kra Pao, Pad Kra Prao, Pad Ga Prao, Pad Ga-Prao, Pad Gaprao, Pad Krapow

For everyone in the United States, please check out your local nursery. Most of them carry holy basil seeds for planting. I found seeds at my local pike nursery and was ecstatic! Start the The seeds inside and then transplant outside per the instructions. You can easily plant this in a pot if you don't have an outdoor garden. You'll have holy basil forever.

As someone who really loved this dish in Thailand and lives in a country where authentic, non-westernized Thai food is very hard to come by, you have my thanks. Delicious, low effort and super easy to make!

Llynya90 Thank you very much 🙏 You pinpointed the exact reason why I started this channel. When I lived abroad I noticed the “westernization” of Thai food as well as pan-Asian versions with Vietnamese, Chinese or other influences which de facto rendered “Thai” food non-Thai or at the very least unauthentic. I want to remedy that so people can see how easy it is to make authentic Thai by only sticking to the right ingredients and my simple process. Have a spicy day 🌶

Thai garlic is different from the China garlic we get in the US. The skins are extremely thin most Thais DON"T peel it. Totally different skin that's not detectable after cooking.

This unmistakable Thai classic desperately needs more exposure in the Western sphere like over here in Melbourne, Australia. You'd be amazed for all the wrong reasons at how few Thai restaurants would have this on the lunch menu 😢

W. Dearth Thank you for sharing your experience. It is definitely ok to adapt to what is available on the local market. I’ve made variations of this with other types of local basil while living in west Africa, Pakistan, Sweden, Nepal, US etc. and even though it turned out edible each time - I must emphasize that it is not technically Pad Ka Prao unless made with Ka Prao (Thai Holy Basil). The taste is very different - still yummy but not the same. Have a spicy 🌶 day and thanks for watching 🙏

I understand finding Ka Prao (Holy Basil) in some places can be challenging. Using general Thai Basil as a substitute is also acceptable. While it won't be precisely the same as Pad Ka Prao, it can still offer a delicious and inspired stir-fried taste. Cooking is all about experimenting and making dishes your own. My wife loves that dish and I have been trying to do this. The previous recipes which I have found have a bit of a different ratio (1tbsp oyster souce, 1tbsp soy, 2tbsp water, 2tsp fish sauce, 1.5tsp dark soy and 1.5 tsp sugar) - I always found it very salty and am wondering if your ratio will actually change that for me - will definitely give it a try!

Batcat Kitty Thank you very much for your kind words and for watching my channel. More videos on the way soon. About the stove. You’re right that an electrical stove isn’t ideal for some stir fries. The one I use in this video broke down so I got another. Can’t recall the brand I’m afraid. You can get anything basic off of Amazon I have attached a link as an example. I don’t endorse that product nor have I tried it but it gives you an idea of what you ideally need for good heat and results www.amazon.com/Portable-Pressure-Propane-Cooking-Camping/dp/B002PJJ0MI/ref=mp_s_a_1_26?dchild=1&keywords=wok+gas+burner&psc=1&qid=1571962374&sr=8-26#aw-udpv3-customer-reviews_feature_div

I’m allergic to seafood and shellfish whats a good sub for the fish sauces or is their none? Looks so good
@WorldofThaiFood
@WorldofThaiFood 2 жыл бұрын
Fish- and oyster sauce are important to get the authentic taste. However, the oyster sauce can be substituted by “Mushroom vegetarian sauce (for stir-fry)” by Healthy Boy Brand which is commonly available internationally. The fish sauce is more difficult to replace. You can adjust using the seasoning soy sauce instead. Sorry to hear about your allergies but I’m sure you’ll enjoy this alternative version just as much. Let me know how it turned out 🙏

Is it possible to use regular soy sauce instead of seasoning soy sauce? What's the difference in taste?
@WorldofThaiFood
@WorldofThaiFood 5 жыл бұрын
lightspeed Try to find and use Seasoning Soy Sauce. You can order it on Amazon (Golden mountain). Seasoning sauce is made from soy bean sauce, salt, sugar, water and food enhancers(not MSG). It can be used in any dish for adding flavor.

How will it taste without the basil.? It is almost impossible to get in my place
@WorldofThaiFood
@WorldofThaiFood 4 жыл бұрын
Chris Pacman well.. it would not taste like pad ka prao since it’s the basil that gives the unique character of this dish. I know some people that have made a version of this dish with basil they found in the supermarket. It can be done but the flavor will be somewhat different from the Thai original recipe.

@@WorldofThaiFood Oh, sorry I'm not criticizing....Love your videos. I'm just letting people know the same thing you're saying -- take it easy the first time unless you have a fireproof mouth. I've made the dish a bunch of times, and even grow my own Ka Prao basil. Usually I remove the seeds and pith from the chilis and use 5 or 6, but this time I was lazy and just blitzed 3 whole ones with the garlic in a spice grinder, and the result was pretty "awakening". I think pounding them the way you did is better because you can then avoid the bigger chunks if the overall dish is too spicy. I also thought about trying it with some milder peppers (prik chee fah if I can get them, or red Serrano if I can't) so I can use more and save the trouble of seeding them.
