I always add either the b3 or the b6 degree of any scale to the IV chord. It completely changes the feel with just one change in note.

Thanks for the lesson Simon. I have a suggestion for other advanced beginners like me. The goal of this exercise is to progress from simply banging the chords out in time to playing them musically and expressively with fine rhythms, voicings, passing notes, etc. I found that I have to slow way, way down in order to have time to accomplish all that, given my skill level. I swallowed my pride, and set my drum machine to 50 bpm. When I did, suddenly I was able to really make music with this progression. Now I am positioned to work up from there, slowly increasing the speed.

My pleasure Steve! That is fantastic advice, so much more is always learnt when practiced slowly. Makes a huge difference! It's good to hear you are making progress :)

I should add that I am doing the progression in key of E, which is making it a bit trickier for me.

An amazing video! I had played the piano as a child and hated it, so as I got older, I thought piano was a lost cause for me and that I'd never be good at it. But I had just recently seen Bohemian Rhapsody the movie, and on a whim, decided to learn how to play the beginning on piano. What surprised me was that after just 3 days, I could play it nearly perfectly. And as I'm watching your videos now, I'm gaining more and more confidence with my piano playing. Chords are becoming much easier. Subscribed. Thanks!

Would have been good perhaps to have explained that you're using extensions 9 and 13 - though maybe that would complicate at this stage. Maybe do a second linked one then that does explain the basic theory behind what you're doing. Just a thought to enhance this excellent video which has given me loads of thoughts of how to advance my playing on chord progressions

I just discovered another cool trick (in addition to slowing way down). In your right hand, stick exclusively to two note voicings. This can open up a lot of possibilities, and is easy to manage for the advanced beginner. Play a melody in the top note, but underlie it with a single other interesting voice. Typically avoid the root of the chord in both voices, but that is not a rule. Keep the lower voice somewhat stable, and, when it changes, it goes to a nearby note. For example, in the I chord, play: R+3, R+4, R+3, 7+5, 7+4, 7+3, 4+9. (The 7 and 4 are lower than the R). In the V chord play (relative to the 5 chord): 7+2, 7+4, 7+4, 7+5. (the 7 here is the same as the 4 in the I chord.) (I am not sure if, theoretically, i should say 2 and 4 there, or 9 and 11). Etc. for the other chords. (probably i should make a video)

Hi There! Thanks for the video! It sounds pretty good with the changes you've made!, but im curious on what's its the explanation for those changes. For instance, on the C-chord ... why adding D and B? those notes are not in even on the chord :S. Just checking out if there's "some kind of rule" that im missing or its just musical inspiration! Thanks in advance!!
