Also keep in mind if you use demulcent herbs to off set the diuretic effects of nettle that most herbs like marshmallow root and leaf are best extracted as a cold infusion to acquire its demulcent properties. If you have powdered versions it would be best to extract them in some cold water then add it to the final mixture after the nettle has cooled. Good video though, its good to know how to do hot infusions without breaking every glass jar in the pantry lol

I keep seeing folks making 'infusions' 'concoctions' 'extractions' etc with the added advice that this will ensure the body benefits from the maximum medicinal properties. But the body itself is designed as a perfect extraction system, surely simply consuming most of these medicinal herbs,fungi etc (when they are actually consumable) is adequate, the body will take care of the 'extraction'.
@MrHarpette5 жыл бұрын
@whispers Actually you don't want to consume the leaves if those were not the very top ones AND if you harvested them late in the growth, because those can give you kidney stones.

You say to put the glass on wood instead of the counter. Did you not notice that the counter under the trivet was wood? I suspect that any difference in temperature was because the counter was a hardwood. A trivet would use a softer, warmer wood. The glass doesn't crack because it reacts with the cold counter. It cracks when the glass is cold and the hot water causes the it to expand too rapidly. A cold counter may facilitate that action. Generally, the best solution is to add a very small amount of hot water and swish it around to warm up the glass before adding a small amount more. When the glass is warm, add the rest of the water. You could also rinse the glass with hot tap water before adding the boiled water. The most important thing to do is to use glass that is designed to be used with hot food, such as the canning jar you used in the video. Don't use, for example, the jar that your mayonnaise came in. Also, wood does not "absorb a lot of the heat out of the glass." Wood is, as you state, "a neutral temperature" precisely because it does _not_ conduct heat rapidly. By contrast, metal feels cold because it does conduct heat well and does draw heat rapidly from the body. But I'd question whether the spatula could absorb enough heat rapidly enough to prevent breakage. There were most likely other variables at play when your jars broke.

I use dried nettle differently. I dry it, crush leaves quickly by hand. ( Very simple) then I grind them into a fine powder in a coffee grinder. 5 second job. I keep the powder, which is as fine as flour in a jar. I heat a cup of water and put a teaspoon of powder in it just as people put green tea bags in. I add lemon juice and drink it all. Nothing is wasted, and I get 100% of the nutrients by consuming the powder. Grinder turns it into dust. Mixes in water great. Can't tell I'm swallowing anything except tea.

You talk about these herbs having a vast number of nutrients that all interact in many ways, I have always said we have much much more to learn in time. ?The pulp you discard, might retain some nutrients, that only your bacteria can break loose from the fibers in the digestive process. ? Not only does it adequately strain the herbs, but by compressing it with the plunger you get even more goodness out of them.
