I remember making something like this before I learned that the length of the elements is related to the frequency (wavelength) you wish to receive. In your case the main rod is about right for UHF and the can top may provide a ground plane. The short wires look like wide band aerials (antennas) you may have seen but are so short that they would only resonate at much higher frequencies and so do nothing for t.v. You have a strong signal in your location as do I. I get away with a short length of wire out of the aerial socket oriented horizontally broadside to the transmitter. Check if your transmitter is Horizontal or vertical. Main transmitters are usually horizontally polarised. The aerial I made as a youngster was about the size of yours but had 4 helical elements pointing out of the window. I thought this would improve medium wave radio reception 🤣

As a 13yo, I too learned the 'proper' way to make antennas. I had saved up enough money and purchased my first CB radio. Just as this person does, thought I'll just put some bits of aluminium rod together so it looked something like an antenna, then was confused as to why it didn't work!!!! After finding and speaking to a few knowledgeable people, it was then explained to me that you cannot just 'chuck' bits together, as this person does, as it really doesn't work properly. So, I then went to the library(was NO internet then) and spent months reading books, learning about Electronics and Amateur Radio, teaching myself how it all worked. Eventually, I was able to make many REAL/proper Antennas like Yagi's, Quads and Ground Planes that worked really well. Hopefully, one this person, will too one day, learn how to make a REAL Antenna....

@julianold4441 A Yagi antenna of some sorts but without calculating the length of the elements to match the required frequencies will only work with lots of luck. If receiving "something" is good enough, then fine.

Берёшь обычную антенну, с пустотелой трубкой и обычный ртутный градусник. Потом, в верхнюю часть, запаиваешь ртуть и вот тебе антена. Только, за такую антенну, можно получить пожизненный срок, с конфискацией имущества. А так, работает отлично.
