It is clear that Leonardo was someone to try and understand anything and everything to it's fullest. Most of us would think about something for a second, wonder about it for another second, then forget about it in the next second. Leonardo would take that something and write it down, take some time to observe it, draw it, write everything he learned, asked anyone who knew a little bit more about, then inspire himself with it.

I visited the Museum in da Vincis birthplace in the town of Vinci when driving around Italy in 1996. It had a lot of models of his drawings of inventions. I'm past 70yo yet I am still watching things like this. I carried a notebook every day up until 2019 when I bought a smartphone of my own, not a work one. I am reading the biography of Casanova (ebook) at the mo, I watch KZbin info channels on archaeology, mythology, geology, history, guitars, electronics, philosophy, natural history, biology, maths, science, and anything else which takes my fancy. I have always been like this. I suspect I am mildly Aspergers. I have never understood people who lack curiosity.

FYI, at 0:14, that’s Michelangelo’s David, not a Leonardo sculpture. Da Vinci was quite jealous of Michelangelo’s superior sculpting mastery, and may have even sketched a copy (erasure found in scan of notebooks).

I bet many people who lived in that time period didn't bother much with the questions and topics Davinci and other curious minds were interested in. He must left all bucket list for himself of course but, he also can't be a fool who thought he was going to live forever. By writing them down he must intended to examine the subject himself as well as if, someone discovered his bucket lists and them to be curious and sloved them. Many of those topics were studied in some shape of form by humanity already. Write it down or it shall be lost among thousands of other ideas and eventually, sadly unintentionally those ideas would be thrown away. But, by writing them down it shall remain and might help to create another brilliant idea or something that teaches the way it doesn't work. This video is amazing, many thanks for making it. I listened and watched it while gathering my evening's spoils upon my chariot. I find myself a Renaissance man much like he was, of course not yet at that same caliber. On and off I've always done this, and I can say that the weeks when I had and used sketch and notebooks, made quite more sense than those without. What I would add from modern experience is the voice recordings. As in, periodically, take your phone with its voice recorder, and your books and lists and pages, and walk around the room recording from them, what there is to do. Then you can listen both as you do menial chores, so your mind can deepen knowledge of your goals and interests, OR more focused, with pen and paper in hand, listen to recording and make fresh maps and sketches of these things you listed. This process, these loops from paper to voice to paper, will help you to swiftly advance your projects, leave out or change details as needed, use repeatable recorded checklists and questions and so forth. Definitely there's something there about voice recordings, and had this been known in Leonardo's time, I'm sure he would have used it along his other methods. I'm left-handed and always wrote my notes mirrored. It was probably both. It's easier for us to write like that because ink smudges like crazy. But it's also nice to know that people wont be able to see what it is at a glance; they have to concentrate if they want to read it.

I love to explore an idea with a notebook and pen. (I don't do pencils) I have many notebooks. I carry aa A6 pocket notebook, I have a A5 carpentry notebook, A4 meeting notebooks (wherein I do sketchnotes), watercolor notebooks, and a commonplace notebook. That 'no one really knows' statement about the tower "...walled without loop holes" is clearly referencing removal of arrow slits/musket slits -- because those are weak points for cannon-using bombardiers attacking a tower/castle/wall. Loopholes were vitally important fortification features in the days of arrows and crossbows but they became a liability for musket and cannon shot and eventually the elimination of castles as a defensive feature altogether.

It was because he was left handed. When I worked in the book printing industry, I quickly learned to read pages upside down and backwards because I worked with negatives a lot. It becomes second nature quickly and as you said, being left handed, he did not smudge.

Good ideas! I keep a commonplace book, which used to be how people kept their notes. Interestingly, it’s precisely because we got used to storing our memory outside ourselves that we don’t remember things anymore. ie: writing it down, recording our voice, etc. I have amazing ideas all the time, but have forgotten most of them because I wrote them down! I can revisit them in my book, but in a way, by not having to keep them in my memory, I also don’t process the idea fully. It’s amazing what you can work out if you keep it fresh in your memory!

I’m referring to the way human memory changed because of writing. :) Our memory doesn’t work the way it did before writing… back when we when we had to remember everything we knew. Most of us RELY on writing now. It’s like Socrates told us in The Phaedrus: Writing doesn’t mean you’ve stored information in your memory, you’ve merely created a reminder. Ie: writing has made our memories weaker. Computers are doing the same with spelling and knowledge. You don’t have to remember how to spell, or remember the population of Ohio. You can “Google” it. Thus, technology’s weakened very important faculties of our brain/mind. If THIS is what we’re like 5,000 years after writing was invented, will what people be like 10,000 years from now? Especially if we continue to neglect nature’s most powerful processor?
