"People are interested in making traditional styled levels. However, they are very challenging to make." As someone who primarly makes Traditional levels (and has made a SEQUEL and is working on a THREEQUEL to his Super World), that line is really relatable. Update: Finished the Threequel

seriously amazing advice. i'm so glad i was recommended this video after searching for first level references and tutorials. it's so hard to balance a level's mechanics without it being too generic or too repetitive, especially because of the SMM engine's lack of SPACE.

As someone who LOVES traditional levels, this was very helpful

It somehow felt like an eternity since you last uploaded, glad you're ok! (Also screw those annoying spam comments)

Thanks. My new job and daily commute really take a lot of my energy away from making videos. But I'm doing ok.

Awesome. I’m making a Super World based on classic “Super Mario” gameplay!

Understandable. I have makin my levels like that for the past almost 5 worlds. Guess it time to change that for the remaining 3 worlds.

Awesome tips man! I’m starting to make traditional levels, I’ve made 1 so far. It focused on a gimmick, but I think the enemy placements weren’t so good.

Great video Loup! I liked the spike example for the use of 'empty' ? boxes: that is something I could utilize more often. P.S.: At 13:41 it just says 'Title.' Not sure if that is an editing mistake or just a bit of humor.

Thanks. I'll leave it to the viewer to determine if that was intentional. 😜

I'm an smbx2 level maker not an smm2 maker, but this is still a very applicable video!

Traditional levels mean you’re playing like a real Mario game

7:05 unless they're decoration or an optional path. 8:40 and the risk of the koopa waking up after a time. 9:46 with how close they are there's an extra option of jumping off the koopa over the pokey. 10:24 yeah that doesn't look possible. 12:08 it's nice to start with a power up though so that's fine right after the start or checkpoint. That way the first mistake is free. 13:43 lol you forgot to type the text in. 16:01 using a bomb is shorter but looks slower and the reward is the same (seems like there shouldn't be an upper left $30).

@@LemmySMM2 who does that? Nintendo does: in SMW2 Yoshi's Island there's some enemies trapped in walls to make the large walls less boring. In SMM2 I've also seen a (good) user level with a ghost too high above to matter but still sets the mood in an otherwise empty hall

Overall, good intro to traditional level making, but some of his advice and tricks are a bit more complex and in-depth than he elaborates on. And there was still alot that he missed- especially regarding asthetic and secrets. If you want a better video, check out Odyssey Central's video. Also, I do plan on putting a video up on my channel sometime next year after my superworld is completed. The trailer for that is up as well! Also, his example for a traditional level was quite poor and had MANY flaws; it felt more like a gimmick level with the bombs than a traditional levels. Some of the best levels I know only have 1 path and that is okay, as long as you understand traditional balance. (again, I will try to have a video up on that when I start my traditional level mini-series).
