A vidicon tube camera gives better results because it operates very differently than a newer CCD or CMOS image sensor, and has a lot of image lag. The VHS camcorder you are using uses a CCD image sensor, which doesn't have image lag and doesn't look as cool as the tube-based cameras. Only the very first VHS camcorders used a vidicon tube. Most vidicon tube-based cameras have the recorder as a separate unit (before the camcorder), but you can get an adapter that will allow you capture the composite output of the camera. I have a 1983 Panasonic Newvicon camera (Panasonic's special version of the vidicon tube, Hitachi had their own version called the Saticon, and Sony had the Trinicon) and the video feedback results are much more psychedelic. In my experience, the Newvicon tube gives better results than a regular vidicon.

EIAJ video cameras from the early '80s and the '70s and back are cool for this too. These use tube based video capture as well. Some are even black and white. Sometimes you'll find one that's been well-loved and the degradation of the image quality gives an interesting additional effect. I find this tends to give unique character to individual units.

I use a VCR that i pass the signal from the video camcorder through to the TV screen. If digital is important to your creative process then capture it from the tape after you've recorded what you want.

whattya think it would cost for a camera for this in 2022 and can i do it with a Flat screen? I have a nearly 20 year old first gen flat screen with RCAs. Not sure if it will work like a Tube TV would. Or did when I did this in the past.

decent with a flat screen, a little more foggy in my experience. i usually see VHS-C or Hi-8 camcorders on local classified ads for $50 ~ $300. Basically the people selling them are seniors who think anything "retro" is very valuable so they expect alot, and can never actually sell them. The only people who buy these are skateboarders and sometimes artists haha. Sometimes you will get lucky at a flea market or thrift store and see them thrown away for pennies. With alot of patience and searching you might get a free one, I got a bunch :]

Feel like a flat screen looks like a screen which makes sense. The tube rounded and glossy the glare and reflections would just become part of the image.

Many interesting variables can also be had when using gear in decline; CRTs with massive color bleed or shift, vidicon tube video cameras with ghosting and burn-in, etc. try a video titler and/or other sources mixed in via a video mixer.

If you want instant visual feedback, you’re better off using a CRT monitor because they have much lower display lag than an LCD.

most of this footage is analog , done with AV cables not HDMI, but that is possible. if you can get a live signal from some kind of digital camera to display on your laptop (like using OBS software obsproject.com/download with a webcam) you could do it

subjectively true for your setup ;) your fb isn't super bubbly, try to minimise contrast, different cameras.. different things can happen :) it's nice if your cable box displays the channel number on the screen but you have a bubbly setup
