Amazing how different cultures have similar traditions and special dishes. I’m Puertorican and during the Christmas holidays we make a dish similar that we call pasteles. We make it with cassava, green bananas, green plantains that are ground into a mash. We cook our pork in spices. Then in banana leaves we spread the vegetable mash and place meat in the center. We wrap it up similar but tie with string. Then boil. They are delicious but lots of work which it’s why only done ate special occasions.
