How to make Water Glass (Sodium Silicate)

This video shows you how to make water glass (sodium silicate) using a crystal drain opener, kitty litter, and water. I'll be using this as a high temperature adhesive to add to a refractory slurry.

I see by the comments that the stuff is available from Amazon cheap, but homestead arts are nothing to sneeze at. How long was the entire process? Would it help to pre-soak the litter?

What would happen if you made this with rubbing alcohol instead? Or added rubbing alcohol after some of the water has been displaced???

Rubbing alcohol or acetone will convert it right back to silica gel.

Add any acid to sodium silicate slowly while heating, when silica begins to precipitate out stop adding acid and now you've colloidal silica.
