Simple little beginner tutorial on how to make metallic watercolor paint that does not really need to be mulled to bind. We will just use our palette knife to incorporate the mica and create a good meld with our homemade binder (or premade if you have some). This tutorial will walk you through the materials you need and how to test your homemade paint.
In this video I just show how to make a small amount of paint - if you want a full pan you would need to remake the paint again after the pan is fully dry (sometimes this can take weeks) before adding your new layer.
➤ VIDEO TUTE - How to Make Watercolor Binder: • How to Make Watercolor...
🔸 LIST of ingredients: www.amazon.com...
(some items are optional and you can get any brand you want but I put them in this list just so you know what they look like):
• Watercolor binder (homemade: • How to Make Watercolor... )
• Mica - be sure to get fine 10-60µm particle size if you want smooth paint
- Natural Earth Mica (natural, ethically sourced) : naturalearthpa...
- Slice of the Moon Mica (synthetic, responsibly sourced): amzn.to/4dRdI2s
• OR, recycle old loose powder eyeshadow into watercolors
• Real or Synthetic Ox Gall (optional)
🔸 Tools & equipment you will need: jannahlyon.com...
• Thick glass or marble FLAT mixing surface (the smooth side of a glass cutting board or thrifted heavyweight glass plate from a microwave work great, but don't use it for food after, this is its life now)
• Silicone Mat (optional)
• Palette knife or mixing tool
• Empty paint pans
• Disposable N95 dust mask or Reusable Elastomeric respirator with N95 disposable filters
• Lint-free paper towels or rag
• Disposable gloves (optional)
• Pipettes or syringes (optional)
• Squeezy bottle (optional)

A disposable N95 mask is one type of N95 respirator - N95 masks DO NOT provide protection from noxious gasses only particulates, you would need a different filter attachment for working with resin or other chemicals.*

Wish I had found your tutorial before starting to make my own watercolor paints! The consistency you get is the one I want and I noticed you did not liquify by using distilled water, which is probably already instilled in the gum arabic - brilliant!!!! Thank you for giving us so much of your time.

Yeah, I find it much easier to mix it all up in the binder first so it has a good consistency. You can however add distilled water along the way too, if it is getting dried out. I will sometimes spray a little on the thinner areas when mulling for longer periods as sometimes it get a little too dry to mull over.

Thank you for the video Jannah, it's helpful to have one that mixes a small amount. Can you please share what does the ox gall does? Thank you.
@jannahlyon
@jannahlyon 11 ай бұрын
Hi, the ox gall add more dispersion to the paint, which means it will spread more in water - it is not a requirement and sometimes I just add it to the water when I paint instead :)

Oo, yes, I bet you are going to have fun with all the micas! I recently got my hands on some duo-chrome micas so I will need to try them out soon, guessing they will be fun to mix :) Thanks for your sweet comments :)

This is fantastic! Thanks for showing us how to do it. Makes me want to try to make my own watercolour paint. Can you do a video about how you use regular pigments to make paint? Will you need a muller then?
@jannahlyon
@jannahlyon 2 жыл бұрын
I recently posted one that pretty much shows the process but there is no talking: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6jUpKZtdqyGrdk it is the same process but I do use a muller to help grind and bind, as the artists pigments are a little different to the mica. I would say that the pigment based mixes require more time and finesse, there is no exact ratio for the pigment to binder (you can start 1:1 then add more binder as needed) so it is a little more trial and error with testing the bind along the way. I also like to add in some ox gall to help with flow. I got my little muller from Ali Express (link in the description) for about $14 and it works great.

What is the exact name of the mica that you used in this video (GOLD)?
@jannahlyon
@jannahlyon Жыл бұрын
Hey Judi, unfortunately, the mica that I got is not available anymore, but I have some on my material list link (in the description) which work great too - but any pure Mica should work, you just don't want one with any fillers, or glitter in there as they may affect the bond with the binder and you would also want it to be non-toxic (which real mica is) for your students. All that being said, I have also made watercolors out of old eyeshadow with great results, but if you a teaching a class you may want to go with the pure mica 🤭

You have to buy Chameleon or Color-Shifting Mica Powders that have this quality, just mixing two plain together will not give you that multicolor shift :)

So do you need glycerine and gum arabic?
@jannahlyon
@jannahlyon 2 жыл бұрын
You definitely need the Gum Arabic, that is the paint binding medium. The glycerin and honey are not essential, but will definitely improve your paints. Most commercially produced watercolors have one or both. The glycerin acts as a moistening and plasticizing agent so it gives the paint a little bit of flexibility and helps prevent them from cracking. The honey is a humectant, so it helps your paint rewet easier and makes them easier to work with 🤓💕
