We get questions on how to repair different types of weld defects, whether it be slag inclusions, undercut, etc. In this video, we will be showing you a students weld that has both of the aforementioned defects and how to repair them. But to make it all the better, we are going to show you exactly where the defects are with an X-Ray from the NDT department and the finished weld will be shot again to show the results.

Yep. The truth is most computer monitors are positioned approximately 10 inches too low. Raising the monitors give you a natural tendency towards better posture. The bottom edge of the monitor at shoulder height will be much safer for back and neck health.

In a normal repair situation the radiographer should give an estimate of the depth of the defect to give some idea of how deep to excavate. After reaching that depth and after chasing any exposed defects the excavation should always be given an MPI inspection to ensure all the defects have been removed. The prodes MPI technique is the most reliable method to use to find defects at the base of an excavation, i.e. better than using a yoke type electrode magnetic. Inspecting the excavation using MPI prior to re-welding makes economic sense - why risk having to repair a second time for the sake of a quick MPI? Great to see NDT being explained and demonstrated on KZbin along with all the other great welding videos that you have covered - I hope you'll continue to help welders with this very educational material.

You cannot get depth from an x-ray without doing a zero° shot and then an offset shot, then running a calculation for it. Unless you are doing RT on 2" pipe and under (likely superimposed technique due to having 3 images) you wouldn't be in a position to do such a calculation. Doing a contact shot (any piping over 3" up to 12" if you cant get inside of the 12") there is no reasonable way to determine depth without performing profile x-rays as a superimposed technique and calculating based off of that. The problem with doing all of that is that it would take more time to determine the depth than it would to have already started repairs on the weld. You could also get an estimate of depth from a normal zero° image due to where the defect is in the weld. If it is in the center of the weld then it is unknown, but normally in the root. If in the center of the root and hot pass but not on the bevel then it is likely the hot pass, and further off to the side it's likely in the cap. That is usually how it is determined how deep the welder needs to grind. I hope this was able to help you out in some way. As an RT technician I take pride in my work and I enjoy educating workers on the technical side of my trade

Also, not all material can be tested using MPI. As well as the time and consumables used to do MPI would be more costly to the client than letting the welders grind possibly further through the weld and have a clean repair, then pass x-ray. The most cost efficient solution I can think off at the moment for reliably determining if the weld is free of the defect would be to shoot a profile x-ray on the weld using a digital x-ray system (if the defect is large enough to detect on a less sensitive medium). This is due to the speed of digital x-ray being near "real time" to get a result compared to an hour or so for conventional film, or up to 30 minutes for the type of medium used in the video shown here. I hope I was able to help

Even if you know how to burn it's good practice to grind your start, stops and restarts. That's where you will most likely get porosity.

Bob Moffatt Yeah, I love my auto darkening helmet too. I suppose we're never going to get as good of view as the camera without sticking our face in the pool. Haha. Maybe they'll make a helmet with a side monitor and torch with a camera on it in the future! I've been getting a yellow tint put on my RX safety glasses and I find they up the contrast of the weld pool compared to clear lenses.

hey bob! im from southern ontario currently a apprentice fitter/welder! im a big fan of this channel and ive taught my boss a few tricks ive learnt from you! i know this question is off the topic of the video but how would you go abouts doing a root pass on 1 1/2" carbon pipe with a 1/8" bevel and a 1/8" gap with .035 mig i previously welded them in one pass with good pen and no pressure leaks. its for a water bypass system but the new bossman wants a root with a cap now. Also i do use rollers
@bobmoffatt4133
@bobmoffatt4133 7 жыл бұрын
Ho man, I'd have to trial run that. I'd probably go at it with .023 wire first. I'd try up around 10 o'clock with pipe turning away. 2 passes. Then I'd go to .030 wire. I'd be a little nervous about turning .035 down that far. What kind of machine are you using?
@lambchops432
@lambchops432 7 жыл бұрын
Bob Moffatt im using a deltawelx 452 i used to do them all in one pass 21v 350w in the posistion you recomended with good pen but i tried it the other day with a 2 passes and i had to do alot of grinding! lol hard to keep that puddle small with .035

We have a new boss and everything has to be done his was or the highway kinda deal..it took me alot longer to do it this way but hopefully he will relize he is wasting a good buck. I couldnt find ANYTHING online on folks doing a root and a cap with the pipe im using! I would almost rather do it with tig if he is willing to spend that much more time welding these. Atleast id save some time on the cleaning! Lol

use a tiger disc to dig into weld it will let you see the slag,porosity ect a grinding disc will dig it out before you can see it so you'll go too deep or deeper than necessary.but if you gotta go thru to the bead well it's zip disc time.

Are you talking production welds in the field or WPQ tests? Because you don't want to know what the UA steamfitters reject rate was on our recent crude tank replacement project, as President Trump said " Sad..." Everyone busts x-rays, we are humans using our bare hands to do surgical work. If you don't bust x-rays at some point, you are doing one of three things: not welding, your company is cherry picking the RT's, or your putting Benjamin's under the ribbon. The welds people bust are the ones where they say "that weld went great, I don't know what happened??".
