You can select items by using the 'layers' panel that opens up on the bottom left. Click on each layer and it will select the item for you. Double click on the layer to rename it, and drag it to reorder it from top to bottom. It's better to select using this method so you don't accidentally move the objects when you click them.

Right clicking on an object, you can 'move to' and select a colour - these are actually layers and you can create a new layer by moving an object to a colour that isn't already assigned to a layer. So you can move objects to new or existing layers that way and then use the layers panel to select and move to back etc.
