I've been wanting some macrame leaves but only had yarn, so I've been making all these leaves out of yarn lately. My yarn either have 3 or 4 threads rolled into one, so after the macrame part, I: 2. individually un-roll each thread, this process is a long one, takes me about a good hour to do each leave but I do not mind it because I am in a fasting process to heal myself so I have so much time on my hand lately 😅. 3. I comb, then iron my threads straight. 4. I make a paper template of the leave shape and size I want. I'm using a beige thick drawing paper right now. I think depending on the color of your leave, possibly buying construction paper in different colors may also work. I notice that if my yarn isn't thick enough, then I see the paper on back and it makes my leaves look flimsy. This can also be fixed by adding more threads tighter on the string. I ultimately wanted my leaves a bit stronger, so I prefer the thicker paper over then softer construction one. 5. I glue the template to one side of my leave. The leave must be combed out on both sides to the shape you want it before gluing. 6. I turn the leave around, paper side down, I make sure top is lined up as needed and give it one slight comb or use my fingers and pat it down a bit, so the glue has more of a hold. 7. I gently hold the leave on my hand upside down and cut off the excess yarn but not right along the edge of the paper, I leave a little wiggle room for later. 8. Place leave on working table, and add a brush of diluted glue and water, 1 part glue, 3 parts water or so. I use a small painting brush and very carefully I follow the threads as I brush on the glue. 9. Set aside and allow the leave to dry. 10. Once dried, I go back and trim off any mis-shapes that I see on the leave, this is why it's a good idea to allow some wiggle room between the leave and the paper template. 11. This is my final step. If the leave threads are not as hard as I want them, and they will be flying all over the place once I hang it, then I may add another coat of the diluted glue mixture to it. I personally like these yarn leaves to stay in place, so I like the glue mixture plus the paper backing I add to it. Some people may want a more natural look, but it's going on my wall so I want them to be sturdy enough. I inherited all these yarn from my deceased grandma so I'm working with this as to remember her since I don't know how to knit. Things I've noticed, the synthetic, itchy yarn is harder to work with than the cotton feeling one. I love how the cotton leaves feel and look and the ease to work with. I'm not sure what they are made off since must of these yarns do not have labels.
