Thank you for this! I’m in Africa so they have a lot of raw milk available here thankfully. Followed this recipe but made the greek yogurt and best yogurt I’ve ever tasted! 🙌🏽

That's so awesome!!! And awesome that you have access to raw milk. We do in our state, but my friend in a state over can't buy it at all. It's illegal. Which is ridiculous.
@TheseLittleOnez Жыл бұрын
@@juniperway Oh I know, it’s so ridiculous. I am from California and I used to have to drive 45 minutes to get raw milk for my daughter. I think it’s illegal there also. It’s such a healing food. That’s why lol

@@TheseLittleOnez that's exactly right. So much corruption. And sad that the scare tactics work on regular people.

@@juniperwayYes! I hear you. Ok I have made this about 10 times now lol but I have a question. I messed up the last time because I was working on so many things at once so…I heated the raw milk for around 3 hours and then turned it off, well my timer didn’t go off and I left it overnight without putting the yogurt culture in…So I put it in the next morning and then let it sit another 24 hours. Do you think it’s ok? I know raw milk that isn’t heated can stay out 48 hours but idk about it being heated? It taste like sour cream lol

I used my yogurt maker and left the raw milk without starter for about 3 days and it did thicken but it is a little bitter though, and I want a very sour yogurt btw. Any tips?

Can you just preheat the milk on the stovetop ? it would save a lot of time and electricity ?
@juniperway2 ай бұрын
I'm sure you could. You would have to make sure not to overheat it and watch it closely, checking the temperature frequently. The crockpot yogurt is for those of us who don't have time to do that. (But also, my crockpots use less electricity than my stove does.)

Thank you for the info. I love raw milk. Does the yogurt thicken much after it is refrigerated for a few hours?
@juniperway3 ай бұрын
It thickens a little, but I've found the only way to get it super thick is to strain it with a cheese cloth. That removes the excess whey and gives very thick yogurt. We like it both ways, so I don't do that very often.
@Jesusgirl-13 ай бұрын
@@juniperway, thank you for responding. Since many of the good bacteria are in the whey, I'd like to keep as much of it as possible. Someone shared the idea of adding powdered milk in order to thicken the raw milk. I may try that, too.
@juniperway3 ай бұрын
@@Jesusgirl-1 just don't toss out the whey if you separate it out. I use whey all the time in other things. (Pancakes, etc.) Liquidy yogurt is more traditional - it's just not what we're used to. I'm fine with it now, though I didn't love it at first.

so the keep warm setting is hotter than the low ? lol, i thought keep warm would be better
@juniperway9 ай бұрын
No, it's not warm enough to heat up the milk, then it's too hot for the cultures to survive.

I think there are people who use commercial milk, but I haven't done it myself.
@JHBtheIV Жыл бұрын
Seems like you’re just pasteurizing the milk with this method. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of consuming raw milk?
@juniperway Жыл бұрын
No, it doesn't get nearly hot enough to pasteurize it. Also, heating the milk is literally the only way to get yogurt. Yogurt cultures don't grow/work in cold milk. Bacteria needs warmth to multiply.
@Iz0pen18 күн бұрын
My crock pot is 170F on low so it would be pasteurized after 2 hours.

finding raw milk here in usa is like finding gold...sad reality...i found one place here in Houston, sadly when i got the gallon of raw milk home i found out that the milk was adultered with a white powder...and tasted funny...so never purchase milk there anymore...another place sell the gallon for 13 dollars plus 3 dollars for bringing the milk to the "store" ...too way expensive...
@juniperway2 жыл бұрын
Wow! That's so sad. And upsetting - them adding powder to it. 😖 We pay around $9.50/gallon, and we get it from the state next to us to get it at that price. The nearest place to us charges $14.50/gallon. In some states, it's even illegal to sell it at all. So crazy. It's expensive because the government subsidizes commercial milk. Otherwise it would be about the same price. (Or a little lower, since it's not as good.)
