my arm was starting to die holding out spinach the first time for my canaries but it was so worth it when they finally nibbled it :,) I’ve been feeding them their favourite greens every day. Quite a few times now they only take a second before they try to approach me but it depends slightly on their mood. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to tame them at all as it’s difficult with pairs, but I wouldn’t dare split them up after seeing how they are together ❤️ your videos are very helpful and less than a week after I got my lovely feather babies I feel they’re much more comfortable with me

Well done! Yes, human arms may get pins and needles during this procedure, haha. Nice job! It can help to keep a taming diary, that way you can compare your progress over time. :) And good news, two canaries are actually just as easy to tame as a single one - they bounce off each other, and since one of them will always be more courageous than the other, the other will learn by proxy. Keep up the good work, this community is here to help if you need it :)

Thanks for the Vid.. Last week I looked after my Mum's canary.. and he was company for Gigi at the same time. How different they are indeed. Gigi is a lot more active.. always up to something.. when a canary just sits there and sings. Believe it or not, Gigi although half the canary's size, eats a lot more too. And thats for sure. Anyways... I'm a goldfinch fan. Nicer colours, song and character as well (in my opinion).
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
Indeed! It really shows that canaries have been domesticated for app. 500 years, while most modern goldfinches only have few generations of supervised breeding behind them. Goldfinches were already pets in Roman and medieval times, much earlier than canaries, but fell out of favour in the late 19th century, when budgies became popular... so centuries of domestication went out of the window with goldfinches. Not going to lie - I prefer their "parrot-like, inquisitive nature" (as you once aptly put it) over a canary's calm demeanour, too!
@Blazemalta7 жыл бұрын
Hi There.. how are you? I have two quite interesting things to tell you... First of all I met up with A Goldfinch breeder and I ended up buying another one. This time a Juvenile without the red mask. This guy has a mountain of knowledge on them, in fact he sexed it for me like the link you once showed me.. And guaranteed me its a male. He got a female to compare from the same brood and their shoulder to wing feathers are so different. So there he is... a male. Btw he is larger than GIgi although he is a juvenile. And regarding Gigi.. well I handled him and its shoulder to wing feathers indicate its a she... even though there is the male trait of the mask extends behind the eye. I came across this website of a bird ringer in the UK and he has seen so many dubious samples.. and birds with male markings that after a DNA test of a feather proved to be a female... Go figure. Well that explains Gigi (now Giga) not singing. So I will work on this one to make him tame.. starting in a few days. Let him get used to his new environment first :)
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
Hello there, good to hear from you! :D And those are amazing news indeed! Yes, determining the sex of goldfinches can be tricky, and the only way to know for sure is having the feathers DNA tested. How lucky, then, that Gigi is an excellent name for both a male or a female goldfinch. Have you named your new friend yet? This is exciting! I've been very well, thank you - it's just that work as got into the way of making new videos lately, and I'd rather not upload any than upload bad ones! I should be back to a reasonable schedule come September. Best of luck taming your new friend - if I can do anything to help, let me know!
@Blazemalta7 жыл бұрын
Well yours is a male for sure.. forget Leporello's markings but his singing gives us no doubt. I was always not sure about Gigi. The fact that I always kept it happy with good quality food, a clean cage that I clean every single day, and treats.. But yet it will not sing. Sorry about the 'it' but I am still mixed up :( I'm glad you've been very well.. same here I'm fine except that we have had four heatwaves already this year. And btw I haven't named my new Goldfinch yet. Maybe this time Im lucky with a male.. this is my third one. Nice evening :)
@Blazemalta7 жыл бұрын
Hello again, I have a few questions :0 Firstly I will like to tell you that the juvenile Goldfinch I aquired is trying to sing... just after a week. Very low though, but lets remember he has no mask yet!! So im thinking he's going to be a chatter box. Without the presence of another male.. will he learn how to sing properly? Leporello had no one to learn from and he sings nicely (unless you played him Switty Goldfinch tunes and he learned from there). And I am going abroad for two weeks and I am going to leave them with my Mum who has a canary. Will my new juvenile learn how to sing canary like.. and be ruined? He has no name yet.. I'm thinking Kal.. do you like it? Gigi must be a female then.. had her for 4 months and no singing.. Nice weekend.

Hi satan, thank you for your kind words (here's a sentence I thought I'd never write)! Glad to be of service. @willisoften7 жыл бұрын
This is working for me as well, although I have to put pieces of lettuce or cabbage at the end of a drinking straw. My canary is a lot braver behind bars. If I put my hand in the cage he'll venture close to see if I have something in my hand but he won't (yet) eat from my palm. I always leave a treat in the cage after 5 minutes hoping he will eventually connect hand and treat.
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
Hi there, lettuce at the end of a drinking straw is a good idea. Careful with cabbage though, as it can cause severe (and fatal) indigestion in birds - it's better to stick with lettuce. Also, please never ever put your hand in your bird's cage!!! Birds respond very poorly to stress in a confined space. Putting your hand in your bird's cage can make your bird lose all his trust at worst, and conditions him to associate your hand and the cage with fear. Always train at a distance with which your bird is comfortable, preferably outside the cage - this way, your bird will approach you because he wants to (companionship, joy) and not because he fears for his life and thinks he has to. This also avoids the common problem of birds not wanting to go back in their cage. If your bird knows his cage is a safe place, he'll willingly go back in again after his free flight. Hope this helps.
@willisoften7 жыл бұрын
OK I never thought of cabbage being dangerous, I thought to get him used to my hand for cage cleaning when he can't leave the cage, but you raise a good point about a safe place.
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
Yes, and thanks for your comment, because I've decided I'm finally going to make a video about this! :) Cleaning the cage should always be done when the bird is flying free: 1) in order not to scare the bird, and 2) because cleaning supplies and detergents are toxic to birds. Most cages have a top (wire) part and a bottom (plastic) part. The wire part can be wiped down with a damp cloth and dried with some kitchen towels once a week. Then all you need to do is remove the plastic bottom, empty out the bedding (bird sand or beechwood chips, NEVER wood shavings/sawdust!), take the plastic part to the shower, scrub thoroughly with a sponge, hot water and dish soap, rinse and dry completely, and then refill with bedding. That's it, the entire process takes about 10 to 15 minutes depending on your cage. Some people do this every day but I think once a week is realistic and fine. Also, in case you haven't yet, please do allow your bird free flight every single day. I can't stress enough how important this is. A bird's health depends strongly on his pectoral muscles, which are only exercised flight. Not letting your bird out every day for at least 2 to 3 hours will lead to dangerous muscle atrophy, which in turn makes a bird vulnerable to all kinds of diseases. All the best.
@willisoften7 жыл бұрын
I can't find any references to cabbage and fatality - only about oxalic acid preventing absorption of calcium. Thats actually low in cabbage and higher (but still low) in lettuce. He is happy to eat kale, savoy cabbage, little gem lettuce, apple (no seeds) and cucumber, as well as seeds and bean sprouts. He's not keen on pellets, pumpkin or sunflower seeds he likes oatmeal porridge. I haven't fed him anything in huge quantities or exclusively he always has seed water and a cuttlefish available and something fresh and different day today. I haven't tried him on anything which wasn't considered safe by some source or other - unfortunately which source can be relied upon is never wholly clear.
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
It is well known that cabbage (Kohl in German, my scientific source for cabbage being detrimental to birds in large quantities is in that language) is difficult to digest and can cause grave stomach unrest. I understand this particularly applies to white cabbage common in Europe. - The cabbage caution was only a side remark, in any case. More important were the points about not putting your hand in your bird's cage plus the cleaning tips.

I can see why you would be against caged birds, I prefer them in the wild as well and I'm firmly opposed to bird catching. Leporello on the other hand was born in a cage (as were his parents and grandparents a few generations back); he likely wouldn't survive in the wild. That said, you are right, birds shouldn't be kept in cages - even pet birds should be allowed to fly free as much as possible. A caged bird is an unhappy bird.

Hello there. So I started out allowing my canaries (2 of them) to fly around the house freely-it's been about 4 Months now. I feel by now they should already be at ease with me around them but no! no! Instead they're so quick to fly to another location like, I'm the devil! So right now I'm thinking of putting them back into the cage with the hope that they get to know me well enough to accept treats from my hand. Now my question is; do you think I should go ahead and put them back into the cage or I should just allow them to continue flying freely (I need them to accept treats from me)? Looking forward to a pretty quick response. Regards.
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
Hi there, here goes: Birds absolutely *need* daily free flight to remain healthy. Their muscles will start to deteriorate if they are stuck in a cage all day, so by all means, keep their free flight (4+ hours) a daily ritual! To get your birds used to your presence without fearing you, please use the strategy outlined in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mojIoHSpd8mCfNE Then, and only then, when they are absolutely content with you being around, you can start approaching them with treats as shown in this video. Luckily, taming birds is not rocket science - repeat positive, non-threatening interactions over and over, and eventually they *will* learn! Best of luck.

Hello! I know I'm a bit late on the game. I have been trying to tame my male European goldfinch (just like yours!) For several months now. I have tried hold the treat from afar for over a month and he still wont eat it from my hand. But if im sitting the same distance away, but not touching the plant, he'll eat it. I even play female goldfinch songs while holding a thistle or dandelion. He no longer flies away from me when I walk past him or sit next to his cage and chat with him, but we just seem stuck at this stage of training. Each time I train I use a plant that is about 10 to 12 inches long. They are snacks he has had before and enjoys! So I know he likes them. Outside of his cage he is much more skittish. I never put my hand in his cage when he is in it (I only clean it when he is flying about) and I never look right at him. I even do everything I can to not pay attention to him when I'm holding his treat into his cage. Any tips that may help move training forward again? :(
@leporellothegoldfinch6 жыл бұрын
You are doing a great many things that are just perfect - like not looking at him directly, coaxing him with food, not putting your hand in his cage and most of all, taking your time. That's excellent! Is your goldfinch at the stage where he is already calm around you? If not, you might want to try this method first: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mojIoHSpd8mCfNE Birds are simple creatures, but they are very wired to respond to a step-by-step process. If one step is missing, you'll get stuck on the next! For now, it seems that the most important thing would be to get your goldfinch get to your (!) voice and presence. Best of luck, let us know how it goes!
@PhoenixVEM6 жыл бұрын
Good news!! Its been almost a year now, but he now eats from my hand when I am holding a long stemmed treat! I probably should have informed you that he is also a rescue and was neglected for at least 5 years before he came into my care along with almost a dozen other small finches of different breeds. I also have cats... and I worry sometimes that they hinder training...

Hi there, Thank you for the video. The taming process is progressing well and I am not sure when is the time to open the cage door for the goldfinch to fly freely in room..
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
Hi there Shobeir, great to hear it's going well! Is your room bird-proof yet? (Windows, mirrors, glass surfaces covered with curtains/cloth, shelves up against the wall, no nooks or crannies your bird could get stuck in, no poisonous plants etc.) If so, and your goldfinch is calm enough to tolerate your presence next to his cage, you can safely let him outside. If you don't feed him outside, he should also go back on his own accord to eat and drink. Good luck!
@shobeira7 жыл бұрын
Mmm, I don't think he is calm enough yet.. As the room light is not enough, I decided to keep his cage in front of a sun-lighted window from an hour before sunrise, until 10am in the next day. And from 10am I bring him into my room until the time. I still don't get that, in what situation he sings.. Sometimes, he sings after moving in the cage for 5 mins and sometimes he sings suddenly without any other sign.. He is eating from my hand but he comes close to my hand very carefully.. (I have messaged you last week through your youtube channel Message, not sure if you read it)
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
At your bird's young age, they are still learning and practising their song, so it's natural that his singing would seem random. Once he learns more and you get to know him better, you'll figure out which parts of his song are actual bird song, and which parts are communication with you. One of the loveliest discoveries you're about to make! :) OMG, thank you for letting me know about the message!! I just checked and I've got a whole bunch of them from other people, too. For some reason it doesn't show up in the notifications. I'll reply at once!
@shobeira7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the points. No worries :) Another concern is: He is not bathing enough I think. He is just putting his head into his water tank but not his whole body. I tried to place a bowl in his cage but he scares to be in the bottom surface of the cage..
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
Oh, the bathing! Don't worry, that's just the sign of a cautious bird - Leporello only ever dips in his head and chest, too, but never jumps into the water completely. Such birds also hate being sprayed with water in most cases. Not bathing "all-in" doesn't harm them, however - they just collect the water in their beak and clean their back in this way. (Also, for the same reason, some birds hardly bathe in their new surroundings; this too is normal, and it might just take a while longer for your friend to get settled in before he feels comfortable taking regular baths.) Flipside of this, since cautiousness equals survival in the wild, you've likely got a particularly intelligent goldfinch at your hands. These are the types of birds who take a bit longer to warm up to their owner, but once they do, they grow very attached and also learn tricks very easily.

Do you think these tips would work for a Zebra finch? I may be getting one for Christmas!
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes, they work on all birds, but 1) one should start here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mojIoHSpd8mCfNE and 2) zebra finches are notoriously difficult to tame. Also they must be kept at least in a pair because they will wither and die when kept alone (strong flock instinct). They are not good first time birds. If you want a pair of birds which are fairly easy and motivating to tame, playful, inquisitive and appreciate human contact (finches all hate being touched!!!), I suggest you get a pair of budgies/parakeets instead. Again, a pair, not a single bird (strong flock instinct again, and a pair of budgies/parakeets is also much easier to tame than a single bird because they bounce off each other).

@leporellothegoldfinch5 жыл бұрын
Certainly - you can simply keep offering an opportunity to do so! Most birds don't like the plastic bird baths you can attach to the cage and prefer a small, shallow dish to bathe in instead. Even so, it can take quite a while until your zebra finch decides to take a dip. Leporello took at least two months before he had the first bath, and it took him three years (!) to hop in completely as opposed to merely sticking in his head. Birds have a natural need to bathe, it's just that it can take them a while to overcome their shyness. :)

Hi, I have a question regarding my goldfinch. His cage (door always open) is in the kitchen and whenever we are sitting at the table, he flies out and circles the table a couple of times (very close to our heads). We have no idea why he does that. Any clue?
@leporellothegoldfinch5 жыл бұрын
Yes! He is likely gasping for air! Kitchens are terrible places for birds to be, because they have incredibly sensitive respiratory tracts - much more sensitive than humans'. During cooking, solid particles of the food (not to mention non-stick coating fumes, which are toxic to birds) are elevated into the air. They are heavier than air though, which is why your bird is probably trying to get to a higher elevation to avoid breathing in these particles and suffocating. If you want to preserve your friend's lifespan, I strongly suggest finding him a place in your living room instead!
@pietermeireleire68865 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your answer. I should make clear that the area is quite large (about 100 square meters), well-aired and he does it even when we aren’t cooking.. Plus, he is well away from the stove. I was thinking more in terms of curiosity or aggression (territoriality). Make sense?

We have two budgies and we got them a few months ago, and honestly I'm not even sure if our house is even remotely close to being a good environment for them, but I'm willing to try to get them to trust me more. Theres not much room in the room we put them in so they had to be close to us and be surrounded by other things, so they were pretty overwhelmed when they first moved here. Anyway, I'm just thinking that the budgies wont get comfortable around us and that we shouldnt have birds. Do you have any tips? Thank you.
@leporellothegoldfinch6 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, these tips work for budgies as well! I suggest you check out the other videos on the channel, as almost all of them apply to budgies, too. If your birds don't trust you, this might be the most important one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGOsmpZtr996rZY - That said, if you feel that having birds is too much for you or that you can't find the time for taming them (you'd need at least an hour every day for a couple of months), there is no shame in finding them a good new home. (In case it isn't obvious, just don't release them in the wild.)

Ah, thank you so much for the suggestions! We were a bit confused on what we should do, so this really helped. Thanks again and have a nice day!

I wouldn't, because spinach contains large amounts of nitrate, which the body turns into nitrite... and nitrite is poisonous.

My bird already eats the seeds that stick to my finger. Sometimes, I try to touch his chest, but he tries to avoid my finger without stop eating. Haha. And he doesn't step on my finger. Rarely, he puts one or two fingers in my finger only. But he doesn't want to get out of the cage. I tried once, but he just kept preening himself inside the cage. So I had to ignore your video and put my hand inside. At least he is not scared of my hand. He just doesn't like to be touched.

I made a little progress. today my parrotlets ate millet from my hand but my problem is they don't eat millet eagerly like the videos of parrots I see. ☹ it's like millet doesn't excite them. also they don't fly around all they sitting in one spot on top of my window. is it normal for new birds? it's been 2 weeks since I got them
@leporellothegoldfinch4 жыл бұрын
Hey Sara, if your parrotlets ate millet from your hand, you're doing a brilliant job! Two weeks is really quick to get this far. Don't worry if your birds stick to themselves at first and just laze around, that's normal. If you've tried yellow millet, you might want to try red millet instead - birds tend to prefer one or the other, and the other might work better.

Hi hi~!! I have found this channel today and need to say it is so interestinas I have a goldfinch too (He is called Chiqui ahaha) and well it looks like he hates me C: I mean he is like afraid to go out the cage, and to me he always does to me that "angry" sound, also he feels insegure when we want to touch him...I think the person he likes the most is my mum as she takes care of him, and to not be long enough we received that bird as from a friend and maybe thats the cause the bird is scared of a lot of things(including me cc'::) ??(That friend took care of him since him was born)
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
Hi, to answer your questions: 1) Goldfinches do not like being touched. Ever. It's just in their nature. If you want a bird that likes physical contact, I suggest budgies/parakeets instead. 2) It takes time (sometimes a long time) to build trust with a bird. If you're not sure how, start with the procedure explained in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mojIoHSpd8mCfNE Hope this helps. Good luck with Chiqui!

There's a birdtaming playlist on this channel which will help you. It's important to take the individual steps slowly and ONLY progress to the next step when your bird is comfortable. Trust-building takes time!

My only dilemma is my two birds don’t have cages at all. They fly freely in my room and have many pitches and toys and a Hanging bed to sleep in. I can hold s treat close but they don’t eat from my hand yet. Too scared.
@leporellothegoldfinch5 жыл бұрын
I see! Your birds do need a cage as a safe retreat, though - they need a place where they feel they can go when things get overwhelming, and where they won't be disturbed by humans, no matter what. Birds without such "safe spaces" tend to be very stressed, nervous and distrustful.

A wild goldfinch will almost never become tame. They are used to nature, not the confines of the house. Please do not catch birds from the wild. It is cruel to them and illegal in many countries for good reason. If you want a tame goldfinch, I suggest you obtain one from a good breeder.
@leporellothegoldfinch7 жыл бұрын
Also, please NEVER grab your bird. Goldfinches are very sensitive to shock and many die of heart attacks due to being grabbed. Please don't do it.

Many birds don't like being touched. Even stepping up takes a lot of trust. Just keep feeding your bird from your hand. He will learn to associate good times with you and will step up eventually. Just don't rush anything.

I feel like giving you one more suggestion. I got inspired by your Plantago Lanceolata in this video. European birds eat plants and herbs that have been common to the human diet for centuries and got into oblivion. Some of them, the Plantago Lanceolata you have chosen here for example, have therapeutic properties. I discovered by coincidence that even the thistle seeds are used in medicine. If you feel like presenting the diet of a European Goldfinch in a video, add please very few remarks on the therapeutic implications or simply on the usage in the human cuisine. This will help to reinforce the bond not only to birds, but to nature itself. Common people will begin to regard common plants, or even the commonly undesired weed and the usage of herbicides with new eyes. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unkraut#/media/Datei:Unkraut_Feld.JPG It is not known, that precisely the disappearance of undesired weed endangers the birds that get nourished by it.
@leporellothegoldfinch5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, these are all good points. I think at this point it is common knowledge, at least among bird enthusiasts, that bird populations have decreased by a third in the last twenty years, and that the biggest reason for this is the disappearance of ruderal flora. This is why virtually every bird conservation society of every country advises people to not cut down wilted flowers and weeds during winter, to leave a part of your garden untended, etc. -- As for the uses of plants as medicine, that is a very fine line to toe. While it is true that milk thistle and other seeds have (very limited) medical uses, explicitly mentioning this in an already brief video would give too much importance to this matter. Connection to nature is fair and well, but I don't want to accidentally advocate alternative "medicine", which for the largest part is irresponsible hocus-pocus and, in my personal experience, causes much more harm than it does good.
@emachimia5 жыл бұрын
@@leporellothegoldfinch I got your point, if you think, that referring to curative properties may become political and lead to misinterpretations or abuses. And, indeed, it is dangerous, when people, for instance, start using herbs to cure cancer. However, if you have a solid education, you can see if and how you can trust the information available. In the case of the Plantago Lanceolata, Wikipedia does not simply mention the curative properties, moreover, it refers to the active substances that are chemically responsible for the therapeutic purposes. This is a scientifically honest and acceptable approach. I assume that many bird owners have an extensive knowledge on the plants and herbs eaten by their birds. I personally don’t have this knowledge and I am thankful to the Arabic Goldfinch breeders who share their knowledge (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmWuhHekjZuDh5Y). As the Goldfinch lives in a huge geographic area, ranging from Asia to Scandinavia and Africa, I can imagine that its diet varies a lot depending on the latitudinal offer. As a matter of fact, what you already do is enough. The Latin name of the plant is an unmistakeable identifier and leads automatically to all the relevant informations.

@leporellothegoldfinch6 жыл бұрын
Hi there, the most important question here is: _Why_ did you grab your bird? Figuring out the reason will avoid making the same mistake in the future. Is your bird not calm enough you yet? Then repeat these steps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mojIoHSpd8mCfNE Your bird should only be allowed free flight once he is calm in your presence (this will only take 1-2 weeks with daily effort). Did you try any of the other tricks to get your bird back into his cage, especially the first? These: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3K6ZaZ7a9RqbLs Did you not have enough time to wait for your bird to go back into his cage? Then try getting into the habit of closing your bird cage's dor (with the bird in it) half an hour before you need to go out. Grabbing your bird destroys the trust you have built with him. Most birds will let you get away with it once or twice in the beginning, but if you continue grabbing them, they will associate you with an intense fear of death and it will be almost impossible for you to properly gain their trust.

Well i released it and it went for the window wich was closed,he wouldn't go back to his cage even though i left his favourite food on a perch.He would fly away from me and not go back to the cage.Even now he isn't singing.
