Thank you for saying this doesn't happen overnight! I'd like to add that birds can also be taught voice commands. My 9 year old budgie was very scared and traumatized when I rescued her, but she's also very smart. To help her with her terror of fingers, along with these methods, I'd also say her name and "step up" if I wanted her to get on my finger. If I was just getting a dish or cleaning, I'd say "excuse me!" several times while in the cage. She figured out pretty quickly that she wasn't getting grabbed or poked at, and would calmly step up if I asked, or watch as I cleaned. She's still not thrilled with being petted, but is okay with it and is calm when her nails need trimming or I need a closer look at her. That has taken her lifetime (I've had her for 8 years).

When I first got my two budgies I did a lot of things wrong. I lost their trust and gained a little again. But then I realized what I was doing wrong, so I started from scratch. Now I my budgies have been with me for a whole year and they are comfortable with stepping on my hand and climbing around, climbing up in my hair, gently nibbling my face and even flying to me when I’m standing in the right position. I love them and to this day I still feel guilty about what I did at first. They seem happier and make me generally happier too
@lunamoondemon93792 жыл бұрын
@@jade-gj6kp never rush anything, watch their body language, try to feed them by hand, but let them come to you, that’s very important. They have to come to you by their own free will. It takes a lot of time, but whenever they hop onto my arm/hands I know it was worth it. It’s also good when you talk to them a lot. For example my female budgie is very shy and doesn’t like eye contact (another tipp) but talking to her and encouraging her to do things like fly around on her own has helped us bond. Work slow and celebrate the littlest progress

@lunamoondemon9379 Жыл бұрын
@@amberlyn28 I think I invaded their space too much. It’s better to let them come to you, at first offer food and with time they will come check you out and jump on you. There will always be ups and downs and if they don’t want to come to you at first don’t blame yourself, they might just be comfortable in their position right now. It takes patience and time, don’t rush anything and celebrate the little steps, its really worth it in the end

@Salvador Budgie - Thank you for doing these videos! There's so many videos out there of perfectly tamed birds (which are a blast to watch) but there are so few videos that offer helpful suggestions for new budgie owners (like this one) trying to help the budgies overcome non-trusting, scared birds who won't come out of their cage, won't play.... just sits there a lot of the time. Any helpful pointers would be so appreciated. Love this one! I have a challenging bird that I've had for just under 2 months. He's a sweetie but is still so reserved and attached to his cage, rarely plays, is unusually quiet, etc. Thanks so much!

I'm in your spot as well! My 3 budgies are perfectly content around me but are very aversive to physical handling. I tend to easily lose hope sitting through a 15 minute video showing off perfectly tamed birds with unhelpful taming tips that have gotten me nowhere. They always act like your budgie is already used to contact and doesn't cover how to get them to that point, unlike this helpful video. Even after 7 months with no luck, I'm gonna try out the tips from this video. My birds don't mind being handfed with millet spray, and the finger in cage thing just might help them overcome their fears of previous attempts at grabbing them from others. Wishing you luck as well!!

Training wild sparrows in a small town in Switzerland I have been blessed with them for years. It's also possible to do this yourself 🙂 by following these simple steps. 1) Find a clan of sparrows you are living close to, try and make sure that there aren't too many pigeons or seagulls in that area. Always wear the same jacket and a hat is recommended to ensure you look the same each time you approach. Whistle a few times 😉. 2) Identity the alpha male of the community, he will be the oldest, darkest brown with a grey patch on his back. 3) Start with white bread, now this is not an ideal food as the starch and sugars are not the best diet, make sure that you are prepared to pay for some sunflower seeds or raw cereals. At first just throw something down a stay at a distance. 4) After you have established that you can see the alpha, watch him, especially when you throw them the food. He will be waiting for your next visit. 5) Chill, just stick around for as long as possible and do not approach them. Leave some bread next to you at all times. 6) After a few weeks you'll be able to whistle while holding the bread out, first they will come and take it in flight and eventually the bolder ones, particularly the alpha and his main squeeze will land on your head. At this point you are well advised to change the food from bread to other more healthy foods. 7) Name your sparrows and then you will even have dreams about them. Take care of yourself and eachother.😊

He just gets annoyed when I do it and he is not in the mood to be cuddled. Sometimes he doesn't run away and wants me to scratch his cheeks and behind his head. Other times not so much. So I back off usually. Sometimes I am down and want his love and affection by treating him to cuddles with my finger. It sucks when he isn't up to cuddling and I need love and my husband is getting on my nerves🤧😭 but you are right that their space should be respected when warranted. They have feelings too. I adopted a budgie from a home where she was terrorized by a cat. The cat would jump onto the outside of her rather large cage and the poor budgie was frightened 24/7. After the second time the cat somehow managed to pry open enough space between the cage's bars for the poor little budgie to escape AND lose all of her tail feathers in the process, the owner had to choose between her budgie and her cat. She had the cat for several years. She asked if I would take care of her bird. She was not tame to humans at all. I talked to her for hours every day. I literally looked like a crazy person talking and explaining everything I was doing. Whenever I read an internt article or a chapter from a hook I was reading, I would "discuss" it with my new birdie It was much like I did after I gave birth to my daughter. I would place her in her high chair whenever I cooked and cleaned the kitchen -- announcing what every item I pulled out of the dishwasher was and where any why I was putting it in a particular cabinet. I sounded like a nut, but my daughter was able to talk in complete sentences long before her "milestone". I did this with my adopted budgie, too (who happens to have come from my now adult daughter's home!). It took about 7 months for the budgie to start trusting me. After sitting for hours and hours talking to her with my head near her cages main door (I kept it open while I talked to her), she FINALLY began getting closer and closer to my big head and face. Then, I added my hand by resting it under my chin. (I tried the hand in the cage sitting still, but it never worked, even after 2 months). As she began getting comfortable with my head in the opening of her cage, she let down her guard. Btw, I played what I call "The eyes closed, eyes open" game with her. I would close my eyes for a few seconds for a good 5 minutes and then I started closing then for 7-8 minutes, all while remaining still with my face nearly inside her cage. I would catch her closing her eyes, too!! It became an unspoken "game" between us, but closed eyes usually means whatever animal has their eyes closed, bus not dangerous. She soon began getting closer while I had my eyes closed (don't peek initially b/c it defeats the trust from the eyes closed "game"). Eventually, she would perch an inch from my nose. About 3 weeks of sitting by my face/nose, I began taking my hand from my chin and placing it in the perch she enjoyed sitting on closest to my face. In a handful of days, she started nibbling nlmy finger and eventually jumped up on it. I've had her for 4 years and while she's still a little skiddish to anything new, she no longer lives in fear. She even pecks my 78lb dogs nose whenever he presses it up to her cage. Patience is THE key. I know many would have given up trying to get her to relax and respond, and she would have lived out her life as a very lonely budgie. She's still a bit skiddish about being held, actually held. She's okay sitting on my hand, head, shoulders, etc., but if she's grabbed, even gently, and held, she shakes. It's why I hate talking her to her avian vet. I've had to hold her bottom in warm water to help her pass an egg and that's the only time she quickly stops protesting being held. I assume she knows it's what she needs. I know the video says the budgie needs 5 days of your finger being stationery on the perch, but mine needed over 5 months not weeks. Just don't give up! The longer it takes for your budgie to trust you, the closer your relationship with your budgie you'll have!

My mom keeps grabbing my Budgie out of her cage despite her knowing it’s scaring her. I’m trying to get her used to my hand though.. Even if she doesn’t trust my mom, will my Budgie still learn to trust me?

I think it can, when I was a kid I chased our budgie and it hated me😬 but it loved my parents because they didn't do that and didn't scare it

Same with my sister. She keeps putting her hand in there trying to grab them and I keep telling her it gonna get them to not trust us. She doesn’t listen.

My budgie's story: i got him by accident 8 days ago. It was lying in the balcony of our kitchen n a couple of pigeons were shouting on it. I shushed out the pigeons n grabbed the budgie by an old mask. I have a Sunconure (Coco) who is an year old. When he was a baby we had got him a small cage n we still had it so i put the budgie in that small cage, gave it water n seedmix. After 3days it was alright now playing on its own in the cage n making various cute sounds. The next day (4th day) i decided to pet it too as it looked fine now n put my hand inside d cage but it started jumping n shouting which grabbed my Sunconure's attention n made him aggresive. I then tried to make the budgie quiet but it won't shut up. So i directly grabbed it (some thing i shouldn't have done as i wanted to pet it.) So now i am here looking out for vids about gaining trust of budgies as i jad no idea how to do it cuz my coco is very well fine n doesn't even bite when grabbed cuz i grab lightly. Thnx for this videos it is really helpful😁

Most People trap their budgies in a cage and don't have any friendship relation and Intimacy Let it fly and be free in house Let it sit and chill on your shoulder You must be a friend to your budgie and love it Play with it and feed it with vegetables Speak a lot with the budgie If you grab it don't do any thing that's anoye and hurt it Be a friend to your pet 😊👍
