Thanks for giving a clear, easy demo. Is it possible with Data Merge to alternate text box positions according to spreads? I’m making a book where full-size photos cover both sides of every other page. I.e. alternating a right side photo spread with left side photo spread (text on facing pages). Each photo will have a boxed caption on it, and related text facing it. I figure I can split the merge data to fit 2 separate files, merge to the 2 layouts, then merge the documents that result and reorder the spreads. But is there an easier way?

If I’m understanding you correctly I would think you could set up a master spread for each variant, add the master layouts to the pages of the book - then merge the data. You could test that on a few pages to see how it would work? You would have to be careful how you set up your data merge file.
