There's nothing wrong with wanting gear choices of an artist because you genuinely like the way they sound. There's something totally wrong with the illusion that just because you mirror someone's exact set up, that you're going to sound like said artist.

I keep seeing people rag on this video series because the drummer does not sound just like (fill in the blank) drummer. Guys, no shit he doesn’t play just like Danny or Ringo or whoever. These videos are nailing the tone. Every video has been good to great in explaining how to achieve the tone of that specific drummer. Plus this guy is pretty damn good drummer. Thanks to the crew who makes these videos. Ignore the asshole haters. Any young person getting into drumming and recording would appreciate this series. I’m an old fart and I still appreciate the videos.

Yea that's a dumb reason to complain because that was never meant to be the point of the video. It's very hard to fully imitate a drummer. I grew up playing tool and knew every song except triad (one of the polyrhythms was too hard for me) and the fear inoculum album but was still never able to fully imitate him. I do have his ride cymbal though (best ride of all time btw)

Great video and the drums sound sick. I only disagree with what was mentioned about the cymbals: B8 or B12?? No man, its gotta be B20 all the way. I will agree that some of the Paistes that are made with B8 or 12 sound decent, I think that B20 is the only way to go. Unless you intentionally want your cymbals to sound harsh.

The details in the reverb article are wildly inaccurate. Danny does not use Beech shells. Danny does not play an SQ2 set. Danny does not usually use his Ocheltree bronze kit (anymore). Now days, he mostly uses roto-toms.

Danny uses brass/bronze for the entire set with roto toms instead of rack toms, along with edrum pads, and a dual kick. So I don't think this is all that accurate.

what are you saying to do with the cut away old reso head? use that as a muffling ring or are you seeing use it as the entire resonant head, just cut most of it away....?
@James-wl5zv6 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, those toms sounds kind of stale and dead-- might have something to do with the batter heads being tighter than the resos. I think to emulate Danny's you would want each head to be as equal as possible with very little to no muffling on the toms. And depending on the era, Danny's high rack tom (the 8x8") was tuned incredibly high.
