Hello Adrian, Thank you for this video and all the others. I have been a translator for 1 year now with success. At the beginning of my career I watched all your videos and that motivated me even more! Greetings from Germany and keep up the good work.

Thank you for giving real advice instead of convicing us that you will give us secret to everything if we pay you or telling us we can make 1k per week on fiverr by doing translation solely using google translate (yes I watched a video on that)😂. This is so valuable for me that what you said is well thought and makes sense, you are like a mentor to me!

Thanks for the video! I am getting very close to the first 1K mark, and if my main client, who only paid me once so far, wasn't stalling for over 45 days to pay the remainder from my first batch of invoices to him, and this **after** a waiting period of 80 days from the time I started working, not to mention the extra 80 days and likely longer that I will have to wait to receive for the latest batch of invoices, I would probably have around 1.7K by now. For these reasons, however, I still can't say I felt that 1K effect, because finding each client is a constant struggle, and most "employers" I had so far make too many demands, while they themselves are extremely slow with approvals and especially, payments. Not to mention that oftentimes most of the source text that I do get to work with is of awful quality, which makes work that more difficult and time consuming, but the payment issues is definitely what haunts me the most, as I constantly feel worried and anxious that they will stop paying what they owe and that I will eventually get scammed. I do hope that thins get better, but the current landscape feels much worse than I thought it would be, and while under normal circumstances, I would have been very happy with my "potential" earnings, I probably will need to find much better clients to start believing I can make a decent living. If possible, I would love to see more videos and advice for people who had to drop out of college, certificates translators can get for free or for less than 75 USD (very important to people who don't live in developed countries like me), and about the free CAT tool that comes with ProZ's Membership, CafeTran Espresso! I would also love to see more videos giving advice on how to deal with difficult clients as well. Cheers! ☺

Hello Adrian, I love your videos. They are giving me hope and motivation! Thank you so much... I wonder, how do you approach volunteering work? I realize we have never touched the subject of copyright in my undergraduate degree. For example, can we translate an article without the author's knowing (for the benefit of the target audience)?

Hi there, good luck attempting it!!! :) one thing you could do is to ask 50% prepayment for first-time clients. That is a regular practice in the industry.

Hi! Can I ask you a question? I’ve been told by my aunt that translating is a dead industry, Artificial Intelligence has taken over and it’s going to be so hard for me to make it… However, my one passion in life is languages and I can’t think of anything else I’d be good at or talented with! And I want a career that I enjoy of course… What’s your advice on this? I’m scared of being stuck in a dead end job and I want to use my passion of languages in my career. What is the way to become a successful translator in this day and age…?
@tastyless5737 Жыл бұрын
Hi, AI can translate texts, but 90% of the time it doesn't understand context. What would AI need to understand context? A consciousness. Do you really think AI will develop consciousness in the next 10-20 years? I don't think so. But that's something everyone has to decide for themselves.
@NadyaYzAngley Жыл бұрын
@@tastyless5737 thank you so much for your response
@Oculaz Жыл бұрын
@@tastyless5737 To be honest, I strongly disagree with this. Translation is definitely a problem that will be solved eventually. I also think that the 90% figure couldn't be more wrong. Depending on the topic, MT engines like DeepL already provide good translations that convey the meaning perfectly. AI right now still struggles with natural writing, but compare the writing quality of GPT3 with GPT4, and you'll see that there is a huge gap between just these two models. AI does not need consciousness to understand context. In fact, you can insert your source text into GPT4 right now, and feed more information about the context into it. If you have a 2000 word source file as a PDF, you can feed that directly into GPT4, and it will most likely understand the vast majority of the context. You can even let it come up with 20 more context questions to the topic, answer them, and its translations will get continuously better. There are still a whole lot of corner cases in which AI translation can be terrible, but, at least in the main European languages, we see a massive uptrend in the quality of AI translation. Keep in mind: progress in AI is usually exponential, not linear. I'd be highly surprised if people will still say that AI translations are not the future (or by then even the present) by the end of this decade.

Hello! I'm one year away from getting my degree, so I'm not too familiarized with a lot of things. When you mentioned we should practice everyday, you said something about translating and transcribing KZbin videos. How should I start? I've looked it up, but the only thing I see is AI generated subtitles. Even if it is for free (practicing) do I have to contact the creators to add my subtitles? If someone can help me I'd be very grateful!

Absolutely no idea where to start with him. I'm terrified. I know 4 languages: Ukrainian, Russian, English, Japanese, and I notice that the number of vacancies for a translator is almost zero. Even more frightening is the AI. I originally studied Japanese in order to become a translator (Japanese - Russian), but I see that the number of vacancies for translators is almost minimal. Even though English is not my first language, I'm trying to pick it up so that I can earn money in it.
