For the gain staging, Just start with the kick, setting it to a good volume (I aim for 0dB but it's different for every kick etc) and then slowly bring in all the other elements and set volume in correlation to the kick

I mix in apple wired earphones and they do translate well on different speakers..also I sometimes put EQ in the master and do a band pass from 300 to about 1/2k ,if you can hear everything pretty well you good to go then turn off

My tip for getting your levels right: since we’re making hip hop and trap beats, we already know that we want the drums to stand out. So I usually start by setting the peak of my kick to around -12db. Then I mix all the drums in around that to taste. Then I bring in the melody to taste. Mixing around the drums this way keeps them at the front and leave plenty of room to move other elements up or down.

Great video, I’ve made a ton of beats and the problem I’m having is when I put them on KZbin they are all on different volumes some of my beats are too loud and some are too low so I have to put up the volume on my tv when my beats are playing on KZbin. How can I make all my beats hit the same volume? This is one of the reasons I haven’t uploaded my beats because it’s more professional if they are all at the same peak of volume.

Make sure you all your beats hit the same LUFS I think…that used to happen to me I was using the daw master channel meter,use a decent plugin to analyse levels

Yes, definitely look at LUFS and max volume. All platforms use a different audio system so it’ll sound different no matter what. KZbin uses stable volume sometimes as well

Then why not just mix while having airpods on? I legitimately wonder. Cuz when I'm mixing in my expensive studio headphones, I barely hear any bass, and I end up checking my songs on my phone with airpods, so I'm just going back an forth.

It's actually a good idea. Lots of people mix with their laptop speakers. I think for using an EQ and lots of other part of the creation process, I rather have good speakers. For mixing, it's good to try lots of different speakers.

what we learned from this video is not to go crazy with the threshold rather use additional compressor before, never use clipers and to turn on and set that damn true peak on.. besides that good vid

When making your beats loud do you look at the LUFS or just make it loud enough to your liking? And if you do what LUFS do you recommend your beats to be to upload it on different platforms?

If you want your mixes to be good enough to compete with modern standard for loud music then you need to mix loud. You need to push your mixes. But I wouldnt really use LUFS. I just use reference track while mixing/mastering. Some genres can get away with lower LUFS. though. Depends.

Hey, I tend to do my own liking. If you look 7:12 when I use Ozone 9, the LUFS are set at -14.

If you’re making them to sell or lease, You’re going to want to make different versions. You’ll want to make the one that’s going to the customer sit around -6db. That leave room for the engineer and singer. And the preview track should be as loud as you can get without distorting. That way it competes with the other tracks people are hearing If going to streaming, I still recommend -14lufs solely because that’s what they ask for.

It’s hard to tell if a layer is clashing. It could sound okay, but then when you play everything, everything sounds muddy. It doesn’t make a melody sound worse, so I do it for most melodies.

All that’s missing from fl studio mobile is the ability to use auv 3 apps…the easiest daw to use but too limited..I just use Cubasis which allows some desktop plugins
