Actually updating your android version will make the phone even lagger. Companies use updates sometimes to slow down your phone leaving you with a decision to buy a new one. Closing recent apps will slow your process in opening them again because you’re making them start over, and it will consume more battery too than just leaving apps on background.

An irreversible factor slowing down an android device over time is BIT/SOFTWARE ROT. That has affected my alcatel trash plus (2015 model) badly that no matter what i do, the slowdown still comes back after just a few days of even factory resetting.

im using an old phone sony xperia m2, after a month its again lagging. internal storage was 8, system is 3gb and the pre installed apps that cant uninstall are also 3gb. remaining 2gb of space... adding the cache and data files will slow my phone. one more prob.. the phone cant read sd card. and also i cant reboot my phone due to its unable to turn off and on again.

I recently got a new phone and hate the dreaded thing. The smallest non-poverty-spec phone available now is the size of a tablet and unbearably thin and slippery. thats because its alrady outdated and it cant run the latest apps that much and sometimes doesnt allow to update to the latest. This is a already consideration to buy new one. Sadly ur parents may dont have knowledge about tachnologies. if they want you to have a mobile that still supports and maintain by companies and google, they should buy a mobile made within 2016 to 2017 for you. Coz 2015 mobiles and below can do only basic like the nokia phones before. just call and text. And yeah i got asecond hand phone made in 2014 so i cant say this things.
