Great video. A couple of minor pointers....If you use your regular needle nose pliers and hold the loop you made so that the tag end you bend around the shaft is parallel to....and against the pliers, that will keep your loop nice and round and I find it makes it easier to get a nice tight wrap as well. Then as you add the split ring on you can also add the treble hook at the same time and save a step. Hope I explained that Ok. Good luck with the trout fishing.

Nice lure building,spinners are one of the lures I love to build too. With those closed loop wire forms,I typically use the closed end as the bottom,where you attach the split ring and hook. I like to attach a barrel swivel to the top,when closing the wire,for eliminating line twist. I like using single siwash hooks instead of trebles,as it's annoying to get out all 3 hook points from a fishes face,and a single hook doesn't damage the fish as much. With the inline blades like on panther martins,you don't need a clevis.

I recently began building inline spinners for stream trout fishing. I highly recommend the Twistech wire bender! It will save your fingers, is time efficient, and produces professional inline spinners every time. I found this wire bender difficult to find in stock. I compared the TwisTech to many other wire benders with the TwisTech the clear winner. Before I bought the professional wire bender, I became very proficient building the inline spinners with an assortment of cutters, wire bending pliers, serrated and non-serrated pliers, and wire bending dental pliers. This experience has led me to appreciate the TwisTech, for one can build spinners in about a minute with consistent, professional results with no stress on your fingers. I de-barb all of my hooks and have learned that open-eye Siwash single hooks are the very best for cathch and release fishing. I pinch the barbs flat, enjoy quick releases leaving the fish in the water, with no danger of removing the protective slime, squeezing the fishes organs, gill hooking, tongue hooking, or foul hooking the trout. I also have learned that there is no difference in hooking and landing the trout consistently. I have learned that it is also quite important to avoid too large hooks depending on the size and species of trout in the stream or river. I've enjoyed your videos and look forward to more. Ron, NE Iowa.

I never thought about making my own trout spinners. This is definitely a cheaper route than buying them in store. I do have a few questions: 1) Did you catch any trout on the lures that you made? 2) Do you feel it caught similar amount of trout as the store bought ones? 3) Have you, or anyone that you know, ever tried painting them with "lure paint"? I ask the third question because I live in Colorado and the fish generally hit Red colored spinners and Red colored bodies are not as easy to find in mass quantities online.
@FishHawk6 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I haven't fished with them very much. I will start using them more often this coming winter/spring. I assume they will catch the same amount of fish. I don't think there will be any difference in performance. I have not tried painting them but I'm sure you could. I believe you can buy plain un-painted lure bodies.

What really is being practical, would be the question? I have a hard time not wanting to build things. Bury myself into all sorts of hobbies. Problem with lures, unless you are going to sell them. Or one is just careless and loose them all the time. Sure! It truly sucks to fork out $4 - $8 for a single lure. BUT! When one has to buy, 50-100' of wire, 50-100 spinner blades, 100-200 spinner clevises, 50-100 weight's/ bodies, 50-100 hooks, beads and the remaining frills. One can build up a lot of lures indeed. Lots of money invested. Problem comes with what do you do with all of them. I have 2 of my very favorites. Use them mostly every time fishing, and fishing fairly often. I have had my 2 for 40 years. I did just purchase another one. Due to fresh paint and shiner spinner. Although it really wasn't at all necessary. I did have to re-tie some fresh bucktail on my older ones. Even that wasn't totally necessary. This same spinner can be purchased without bucktail. Maybe the fish don't care. I caught them on both bare hook spinners, just as bucktail ones. Who it the bucktail for????? Me or the fish???? It doesn't seem it's for the fish. Lots of new gimmicks out there today. Mostly expensive ones. I guess the fish also didn't get the memo, that they are supposed to quit biting the old vintage style spinners. Put all focus on new style High $$$$ ones. It seems the fish still don't care!

Think there will be much difference from not having the bundle of hair covering the hook? Maybe you could do a face off of your lures vs rooster tails once you get on the trout

I dont think it would be hard to add that to your homemade lures tho. Just get a fly vice and a wrapping tool

I thought about that. I tried buying dressed treble hooks that had the hair on them already. Then I thought about adding it on my own. I could try doing a face off to see if it makes a difference. I think it would be tough though.

@FishHawk6 жыл бұрын
The initial cost is higher. I spent $31 on all the parts. But it will make about 20 spinners. That comes out to $1.55 per spinner. You could do it cheaper if you got some cheaper parts. I bought some nice Berkley Fusion hooks. That was the most expensive part.
@redbeardthepink48092 жыл бұрын
1000th like w00t!
@timothythompson26786 жыл бұрын
I saw in one of the comments below that you had a cost of $1.55 per spinner. That's like half of what a roostertail would normally cost. I'll bookmark that website. I lose a lot of roostertails. And midwest finesse jigs. There are molds available for those, but it's a higher initial cost. You have to get a melting pot and lead, plus hooks on top of the mold.
@FishHawk6 жыл бұрын
Yeah man! Definitely more cost effective. Like you said, just that higher initial cost but in the long run it's much cheaper.
