Nice job, very concise and complete. I bought a mold with a handle and still have to use it and I had the idea of taking all these lead fishing weights I find when I go treasure hunting in rivers and lakes and making them into weights.

For any consecutive pours it might be a good idea to preheat the mold to make sure it’s dry, and to help the lead pour smoother so you don’t get as many jagged edges.

What if the lead gets stuck inside the mould? Should some oil be put on it before pouring the molten lead?
@mattnorman99613 жыл бұрын
DEFINITELY not. Any oil, water, even dirt in the molden can cause it to spatter onto you. The differences in the composition of the metal stop them from sticking together, just need to give it a tap once its cooled down 👍👍👍

How many dive weights could you make with the tin? no failure on its end? also how much extra lead do you recommend adding?

avital arbel Hi avital! I found it at diveimports.com which is an Australian site. See if you have a dive supplier wherever you're posting from, and if not ive seen some people making molds out of clay too.

Hi Matt, first, thanks for the video, really captivating :) Have you considered painting them? My worry is, obviously, lead poisoning in contact with water (i meant for the environment). I bought a couple of weights last years (4kg, around 10lbs) and would like to paint them, but don't know how... Any advice will be much appreciated :)

Hi mate, thanks for watching. I dont believe lead poising is an issue considering the relatively small amount of time we are in the water, as long as we maintain our distance from marine life as we should be doing anyway. That said, there have been studies on the effects of lead toxicity caused by discarded fishing weights, sinkers, shotgun pellets etc that has concluded over time they can cause harm. To counter this it is important to be properly weighted to ensure you will not find yourself in a situation where you must discard your weight belt (if you use one), as well as ensure that weights are secured so they do not fall off during the dive. With regards to painting weights, look up a product called plastidip, or any other similar product. In australia it can be found in any automotive or hardware store and provides a rubberised and custom colour coating.
