Shop made finishes are great. I make mine using 16:3:1, by weight, of linseed oil : beeswax : citrus solvent. Just sharing my ratio in case anyone wants another data point.

I started using my homemade finish about 6 months ago and have had great results. I experimented with cold pressed British rapeseed oil (because I can buy it for half the price of cold pressed linseed oil). To make it into a curing finish, I heated to Smoke point 230°c to polymerise (on an induction stove under extraction in a professional kitchen). When fully cooled, I mixed with beeswax so it is a thick gel. when spread on a piece it softens to an oil with the application. I initially did some experiments on curing and it works great. Even stood up to a water test as droplets ran off instead of being absorbed. Is a very satisfying feeling to use a homemade finish that works. Great informative video..

I use a similar mix for my home made finishes: beeswax, boiled linseed oil, and gum turpentine. These are the genuine natural products I get from an art supply wholesaler. Gum turpentine is distilled from pine resin, so it's a perfect thinning agent. I make it in a paste wax form with various ratios of wax:oil:thinner just like you do. As well as a timber finish, the paste wax can be used as a protective barrier to rust proof tools.
