This video will teach you how to FAKE beautiful cinematic sunset lighting, and do so on a budget! With a simple small lighting setup, it is super easy to achieve a look of sunset even in the dark of night!
Lights I used were Aputure 120dii and some Aputure LS Mini 20's.
I also used a 5in1 diffuser reflector. All of these can be replaced with cheaper budget alternatives like work lights from hardware stores and sheets for diffusion and bounce. Do what you can with what you have!

@@BradyBessette For sure! I really love using my 1/2 BPM on my GH5, paired with some film emulation in post and you can get a really awesome surreal look. Two weeks ago I went camping with my friends and decided to film a little bit, I used the 1/2 BPM and it gave the video a really awesome surreal vibe (and took a bit off the digital feel of my GH5). This was an awesome tutorial. Shooting at sundown is challenging for sure (we do it for live music) so I think borrowing some of your strategies here to help supplement that light will give us a good combo of a perfectly natural look and a wider window of film time (along with a more consistent look throughout). Love the DIY approach my dude.

@@BradyBessette Yeah you should give it a read honestly. Its kinda crazy all the situations that the author goes through, its very inspirational. Plus theres a part where he meets Steven Speilberg and its pretty funny and cool. I'll bet you'll appreciate it, From one filmmaker to another, you know what its like. Keep up the great work and lightning. Your lighting is very impressive and practical which i think helps a lot of the newer filmmakers out there. I remember when i first started lighting a decade ago and tried to find videos online. It was pretty difficult and most videos over the last decade dont really show very realistic/practical situations. Most new filmmakers DO NOT have amazing expensive lights/gear or an actual location that's meant for lighting lol. Nothing is more annoying than watching people who have all top notch equipment, perfect locations and yet still dont properly explain or breakdown what theyre doing. Cant tell you how many videos ive seen like that over the years in which i gained nothing of value or knowledge from...lol. You're doing a good thing for people here and the results are showing. You're definitely earning your rapid growth of subscribers. Cheers!

Thanks for the well done breakdown! Just one question: Did you happen to use this setup(s) on actual projects? I mean, yes, you did very well with the shot, but how would it hold if she'd stand up and walk to the (camera) right? Would you be able to pan with her? And how about the skedule? What if you were forced to shoot this scene over a longer periode of time - let's say from noon till midnight - any ideas on how you'd approach lighting when the sun's position and intensity change? Just curious.
@BradyBessette
@BradyBessette 4 жыл бұрын
Great questions, all shoots are different and deserve a different approach to the setup according to the shots. I would use this setup in an actual project but would change lighting for different shots whether they're mid tight or more wide.

@@njugunawainaina Well it's a sunset replica. And I don't see anything impractical about having the candles on when the 'sun' is going down. Nice Video Bro, I have been checking your videos recently and its really fun to know these kind of techniques, really appreciate your stuff. It would be very helpful if u let us know the cheaper version of the lights you use or any DIY lighting set up that you would recommend. A big Thanks from India.

I love this type of content. You're amazing!. I'm a new italian subscriber and unfortunately I can't follow every single word but I catch the sense. Could you suggest me some books about creative use of lights settings?

Nice. The fan placement was a little weird. For a while I thought you accidentally left a fan blowing up into the corner or that there was some heat blowing from an air register. Maybe redirecting the air horizontally with a piece of cardboard would help ruffle the sheers more naturally.

Oh my, I wished I stumbled across your videos sooner. Rushing to buy those Rosco filters, and some more lights, I hope to get them in time. Thanks for your videos, they have greatly improved my understanding of lighting.
