These are both gorgeous creations! If I had to pick one, I would go with the natural wood one, just because it showcases your beautiful carving the best. Also, I must thank you for bringing this simple recipe to my attention, I have many times had the thought of how one could make a simple and cheap staining liquid, but I keep forgetting to look it up. I shall test this!

Isn't it funny how kids come up with these things? Our grandson Lucas called my wife and I "Gla". If he wanted to show me something, he'd take my hand and say "Gla, come!" If he wanted to visit Grandma and Grandpa he wanted to "go Gla house". I was a bit sad when it became Gamma and Gampa, although my wife was "Gamma" first. I was still "Gla" for about a week.

In the spoon carving world, we call this "ebonizing solution" and it works because the steel wool becomes iron acetate when dissolved in the vinegar, and that reacts with tannins in the wood. It is also perfectly food safe (though, it is best to wash spoons it's been used on because if you don't it will taste like vinegar.).

I like the Black one, reminds me of a semi precious stone we have round here called Whitby Jet that is used in a lot of jewellery. That said, the lighter colour shows it as a wood carving. The staining the solution shows on some of the other woods is really interesting, especially the Oak. May have to try this out

Hi Mike, I just carved a small blackbird for my mother, and a larger raven for my wife, both of them were carved from a red cedar tree I cut down earlier this year, and instead of making them into a necklace, I put a safety pin in the backside and made them into a brooch, I used the vinegar and steel wool trick for the first one- on the second one I used a dark polyurethane stain, both turned out really nice- but I liked the one with your stain better
