If anyone still cares 5 years later, I think the best and easiest upgrade you can do is the exhaust chute. It needs to be much taller with a slight radius or taper to concentrate the stream of snow so it doesn't break up and catch wind so early. With the deflector higher from the ground the snow will also take longer to fall to the ground and thus will travel further. Look how more modern blowers are designed. I have done this on several machines. Also, keep the revs up and feed the snow in as fast as the engine can take it.

Thank you for your comments. Those are good points to consider. Do you have pictures of how you extended the chute? And did you find that the extended chute tended to plug up quicker with wet heavy snow? Thank you

Another commenter is right. I did mine 5 years ago. Do all the paddles fully from the backside. Tighten the chain or add a better idler to it. Make sure the chain is not stretched. A stretched chain won't fit the sprocket properly and may make a popping sound and wear out the sprocket prematurely. For balance, you may want to add a 2nd paddle. Your snow blower sounds a bit like a steam engine because it is not under continuous load. By doing this you may avoid the "there's always somethin" scenario. I went to a parts store that sells things like bearings. They gave me some very heavy duty belting. Good job on the video.

After watching I did this to my 8 ft blower and gained 20 ft. Also on my 5 ft. It eats wet heavy slushy snow like a champ. Easy 40-50 ft. You have to have a lot of volume. If I may throw in my two cents here, Great job capturing more of the machines available power, snow throwing capabilities but I can help you make it even better! First off you need to locate a belting company which makes conveyor belting for your rubber stripes needed, they throw away smaller or used belting all the time! Second, attaching the belting to steel plate with elongated slots in it so that as the belting wears you will be able to adjust and use as much of the rubber belting as possible by moving the steel plate with the belting attached closer to the round chute area to throw the snow. All four paddles must be used as otherwise you are placing unneeded pressure on the bearings of the shaft for the second stage of the snow blower. If you get my drift/meaning here. If you don't follow my idea just contact me here and I'll gladly talk with you about any day. I love projects like this, making something better than it already was. You could also sell your idea back to the machines manufacture but I suggest you get an attorney so they don't screw you out of it somehow! Last thing, Safety must always be the primary goal and when you exited the machine and left the blower slowly rotating you placed yourself in great danger, trust me as all it would take is a simple slip and you would be toast or one huge mess of tangled ripped off body parts. I injured myself in a similar way just by ''accident'' so I should know. Only trying to convey good ideas and thoughts. Good luck and great idea!

I know 3 years old. Thought I would mention you should have put the rubber pieces on the other side of the blade. You put them on the side that scoops the snow and throws it. By adding the rubber to that side you are causing more friction with the snow. it will likely throw better if the snow didn't over the rubber pieces. I would also use a carriage bolt from the scoop side since they have a flatter head on them.

That blower looks a lot like the one my dad designed and manufactured from the late 60s through to the 90s. It was called North American and was produced in an 86" & 100" wide version with both a single and double auger. There was also a 120" version with triple auger that really gobbled up the snow. The problem with this particular version is the main auger blades are supposed to be longer and intersect in the middle to feed the impeller. As I remember there was no need for the rubber additions as the gap between the impeller and housing was less than half an inch. It was tough to get the impeller installed on the gear box shaft in that tight space. As noted in the comments it sure looks like it is running backwards so the impeller is not working properly. I had another look and the auger is going the right way so it must be a video frame rate issue. On a 40hp (minimum hp and way better on 100hp especially with double augers) tractor the original blower would easily through a three foot high bank of snow about 50' plus anything else in the snow like mailboxes. Seems like this particular one is a light weight inexpensive knockoff. I probably helped to assemble or make parts for several thousand blowers.
@NevinWilliams7110 жыл бұрын
Snow will be thrown further when the chute is aimed in the same direction as the impeller's rotation (to our left, as in the second video), than to the right (as in the first video), so even if you made no modification at all, it would be expected the snow would be thrown further in the second video than the first.
@gillesgoulet25457 жыл бұрын
Nevin Williams it's an optical illusion caused by the camera frame speed. The impeller is always turning in the right direction. Same thing happens in car commercials.it seems like the wheels are turning backwards. If the impeller would turn towards the left of the screen well the snow wouldn't go anywhere.
@MidwestMiddleClass10 жыл бұрын
+RogerArnold - It's an optical illusion caused by the "shutter speed" of the camera. Similar to how lines appear on a television screen or helicopter rotors when filmed. That second stage fan is spinning very fast even though it appears to be barely moving.

They are connected yes. But they are connected wrong. Something is assembled incorrectly. If you look at the side the chute is on you'll see it is supposed to be on the "up-side" of rotation. The way it's turning puts it on the "downside" of rotation. Surely you can agree that it would make no sense at all to put the chute on the "downside". Also, if you look at the blades they are cupped on the end to help hold the snow on the blade as it's picked up and thrown. By turning counter-clockwise they are cupped the wrong way. Surely you can agree with that also. It's common sense. You are both wrong. Something isn't assembled properly and it's causing the impellor to rotate the wrong direction. If you get it rotating the right way then you'll be blown away at how far it will throw. I know for a fact that it should be throwing waayyyy better than that. Notice too how it comes out all cloudy and spread out? It's doing that because it's getting thrown AGAINST the wall of the chute and not ALONG the wall of the chute. It should be throwing in more of a compact stream.
@bsteleven6 жыл бұрын
@@highwire6899 look at the video at 8:02 if you will notice the paint is worn away on the upper edge of the scoop because it's the leading edge of the rotation. why? as it is shown at 8:13, is there no paint worn away on the side you claim is the leading side or edge of this blade????? The only time you can see which way the blade is turning is when the machine is idled down and at that speed the rotation of the blades and the frames per second of the recording device are not synchronized which makes it appear as though it's going backwards. and do you think the owner operator when he gets off and looks at it doesn't know what the hell he sees. and do you think the manufacturer would screw up and make that stupid of a mistake?
@highwire68996 жыл бұрын
@@bsteleven In the early part of the video he puts his foot on the front of the collector and causes it to rotate slightly and when he does I noticed the impeller did turn in the correct direction when he did that. 4:24 So yep, I was wrong. I mistakenly didn't consider the frames per second. As far as the manufacturer assembling it wrong, that wasn't my assumption. My assumption was that somebody had it apart and worked on it and re-assembled something wrong. It happens. But, anyway, I'll admit I was incorrect.

Two suggestions. 1. Go to a truckstop and buy big rig mud flaps. Twice as thick as the one you bought and much bigger. 2. The way the blower is throwing snow out the front. I would construct a hood extending off the top n sides. That would funnel the snow more effectively towards the impeller. Just a couple of thoughts.

Suggestion. Add those wipers to all of the paddles, on the auger take all the slack out of the drive chain & add a wiper to it for the full length. Last remove that paddle in the center and replace with an angle iron {acting as a scoop } that monster will really eat snow then! I run a Cub Cadet with a 44in blower & the auger you have is great with the 1 peace blade, it will carry tons of snow. I replaced my blower and the new one had segments instead of 1 peace auger it work not to my liking. Nice tuff machine you got there, take good care of it and it will last. Great fun watching you there!

Your major problem is that the bower is rotating in the wrong counter-clock-wise direction. If you look at the vid the blower is throwing snow out in front. The auger is rotating in the correct direction to pull in the snow to the blower section. Check you lines to see if they are correct. I would have drilled the holes so that the mud flaps could have been reversed to get twice the life. I would replace the bolts with stainless steel to make it easier to change as the salt will rust them.

Blower manufactures should make the chute as one piece of injection molded UHMWPE, it it super slippery on snow (this is the plastic snow sled are made from), then have a steel flange baseplate and a UHMWPE deflector at the end of the chute so snow will not lose speed in the chute, also UHMWPE is a super rugged plastic so it will last forever. I would use 1/2" thick pieces of UHMWPE instead of rubber on the impeller blades for the same reason it will close the gap and it is super slippery. The UHMWPE could even touch the drum and it will wear to size in the first few minutes of the first time it is used for a perfect fit from then on

?? EXACTLY. ANOTHER REASON FOR THE KIT. When you have very little snow, what little there is falls through and there is nothing behind it to get thrown, so nothing gets thrown. When there is a lot of snow, the first little bit falls though, and then there is more behind it which can get thrown, before all of it can fall through. Make sense? With the kit and no gap, then even a little bit going it will get thrown, because nothing can fall through.

I don’t own a snow blower but I have a question. I have experience in large centrifugal pumps. The best pumps have a cast bump that closes the gap in the volute at just the right spot just as your mud flaps do. What would be the effect if you closed the gap just as you’ve done but on the housing not the impellor?

Macgyver would have used some left over conveyor belting ! I built a slotted spring loaded system ( self adjusting ) with 3/4 " steel wire core conveyor belting on all nine vanes of the blower ! It has performed excellent the last 7 seasons ! I also added strips of belting on 3 of 6 rotors on both sides, and the full length of each blade, this works great for pavement or concrete squeegees them nice and clean with no damage to surfaces 🏔 😎

Your problem is your rotation is the wrong way. Look at the auger. 1) it has tabs on it to hold the snow in place if it spins thee other way. 2) the auger is throwint the snow into the shoot on a angle. Changing the rotation would throw the snow up.

Great idea and I've seen it done before so maybe I'm saying nothing new but here goes... Thanks for the video however.....I have a smaller B&S and might do the same for mine although some might say that the company may have under-engineered things so they will work with the clearances there and less clearance will strain the minimalist components....who knows eh. Snowblowers will throw further to the right than they do the left. Your impeller is rotating counter-clockwise. The snow is coming directly off the impeller. When throwing to the left the snow must change direction entering the chute. I tried putting conveyor belt rubbers on mine and they didn't last very long. It wasn't worth the effort.

Why not all four paddles, that would give it balance, and may throw the snow farther, I'm getting so that hate snow, way to much snow this year, I'm in CT on the shore line where the snow doesn't last long except for the last few years. Good Luck with your blower..

Anybody that says making the gap smaller doesn't work is full of crap. I worked for a guy with an 8ft dual auger Farmking tractor 3 pth blower. The fan was worn out and started breaking up. The gap in the blades and housing was over an inch. with the new fan it was down to less than a 1/4". What we found was the 90hp Deere was working way harder than it used to driving the old fan. But it would blow snow clean over the top of grain storage bins, that it would only hit half way up before the old fan was changed. The fan was the cheap part, in the end he had to change the tractor for a bigger HP one. 90hp was struggling to move it's self and drive the snow blower in real deep snow, another 80 odd hpon top fixed that problem.

I also think you're impellers running backwards the shoot is on the left side should be running clockwise looking at

What if it doesn't snow where you live?

nope looks like every sno blower made

Its just an illusion. The frame rate on the camera and the speed of the impeller make it look like that. If the impeller actually were going backwards, the snow wouldn't even go out the chute at all.
@SuperCountryclassic6 жыл бұрын
the fan is not spinning backwards people look at the shute in relation to the rotation of the fan

How well did this mod hold up. Does it still throw as far have you had to replace the mud flaps due to wear?
@ariip10 жыл бұрын
You should do all four blades. You are improving 2 of the blades performance and sacrificing performance comparatively on the other two passing the buck. Doing all four will improve it all the way. Why sacrifice any performance?

A good coat of a ceramic wax on the housing and the chute will help move that snow through.
