These videos always reminds me there actually are other people also who enjoy spending time in the shop and doing stuff like this - totally unnecessary and money could buy you ready made solutions - but where's the fun in that 😁. I often have people coming by to my shop, looking around, rolling their eyes and asking what is it I actually do here. It's like you should have three shifts working around the clock, spitting manufactured products for sale just to justify the 40-50 year old machinery. Meanwhile they're spending 60 grand on a new car which will lose half of its value during first three years...about the same which will provide me a lifetime hobby (and therapy)

Right at the start I thought "I know what he's going to do". I was totally wrong, but as I have exactly the same situation, but I don't have space for the swivelling tray, you have inspired me to progress with my concept. The lid will have a tray attached to it, and the hinges will be replaced with a four-link parallelogram. The lid (and tray) will swing up and back. This is hardly a new concept, or original... many mechanic's toolboxes used it to access tiers of trays, but I have not seen a lid/tray done that way. I am in the middle of a project just now, and by the time I finish, I will probably forgotten all about this, so don't you go holding your breath! 😜 Love your work... Thanks.

Look ma, no hands! I made a 2" thick insulated door for the bottom of the cellar hatchway, and used a spring loaded ball & detent to keep it closed. No doorknobs, just a pull handle on each side. Now when my hands are full, all I have to do is push it open. (That is, if the deadbolt ain't locked!)

This is one of the best toolbox modifications/additions I’ve ever seen. It solves a huge conundrum that is the lid of a toolbox. I don’t think it’s over engineered at all. It’s a work of art and precision. The detail you put into your craftsmanship is much appreciated. I plan on doing the same to my old Mac toolbox. I hope I can do it half as good as you. Thanks for all the inspiration. You make me want to switch professions from expert welder to expert fabricator. I am an extremely experienced welder in all processes however I know I’m a long way from being a master welder.

A wee trick . mate. I when centering stuff in the lathe have a tool I made when pressure rolling stuff over a male plug (silencer end caps in my case...)...it is simply a 50mm -ish roller bearing on a rudimentary tool holder... so of it is a round piece that is, I just put it in the chuck just tightening it a bit , then just touch it with the roller bearing , pushing a wee bit....then it is centered , one both see and hear when it centers... after which I tighten the chuck, works like a charm 4 everyday use !! If critical ,I then check it with a clock . Involves an additional tool change , but it is most convenient .......

Hello Paul, I have enjoyed watching the meticulous way your tool box extension has worked out. I expect others will point this out too. I felt that the mechanism would benefit from a home position, not graduated at any other points as this would make the mechanism jerky to operate, simply a satisfying home position to correctly ’ notch’ the home position. Keep up the marvellous videos from Mitch and yourself. Thank you.

Hydraulic pipe and hose clamps quite similar to your aluminum pairs are available made out of UHMW and some other plastics too for anyone who's interested in a quick tube clamping option. @yodasbff3395
@yodasbff3395 2 жыл бұрын
Little overkill, but very well done. Now you need to add detents so the shelf will stay in place in either position 😉. This can be done by putting notches in the top bushing with a corresponding bump in the part that swivels. Liked your universal threads. 👍

Fearsome Warrior, sorry, but I do not have a "ski-out shop". I do have an elevator, but that is not an active chairlift...

@@paulbrodie oh I thought I saw it out the window. The shell cage over the lift is what it looked like and I saw people wondering by like they were skiers.

Yes, mine probably was a little over engineered, but it sure works well.

Okay, that’s just a bit too cool. Tool envy for sure. Shows what you can do with a machine shop in your garage. I’m jealous, and about to go buy a milling machine. I will be replicating this project, am going to try a couple of things different. I’m going to put the hinge at the front to facilitate “opening” the shelf but it not hitting the cabinet that the tool box it is next to. I think I might use small pillow blocks or trunion bearings for the pivot, just to see if I can make it work. Your project is a great inspiration. Thanks.

Have you got shares in an aluminium mill? I noticed the Bultaco sticker. My dad had a Sherpa, and a Greeves Anglian. I had a Montesa. Great days😀.

I had a Greeves motocross bike but I never rode it. I do not have shares in an aluminum mill.

Thanks Rick. At 18:40 that is a worker on my neighbours property working on his new shop. We have the sound of construction 6 days a week.

Nice work Paul. With that stop watch timing yourself you seem to be evolving to the "equalizer" of the fabrication world. Now that shelf is nice but I could imagine putting so much stuff on that shelf in my shop my toolbox would tip over when I rotated it (lol). Nice work as always thanks for posting.

Thanks Sam. I have a few drawers in the bottom box that have some really heavy stuff in them, so there is no danger of a tip over.

Like the cable end reverse taper technique. You need to find something to add to the overkill aluminum plate on the side! Nice way to create a useable work surface.

Hi Paul, I had a similar problem & made two shelves either side of my bottom tool box, just two 18” shelves with 45° support brackets.
