Sorry for your loss. Hopefully you can find the peace that surpasses all understanding. After I lost my wife I definitely needed the slow calm quiet of the outdoors. I found comfort in surfing, skiing and dirt biking but you can't do it every day and it's expensive running around. Since I got into e mountain bikes it's now easy to ride every day. The magic carpet has just enough power to be fun but more forgiving than a motorcycle. Now I am scouring Google Earth for new undiscovered singletrack and ways to connect areas into megaloops plus making a few secret tracks of my own. Fun is the only natural cure for sadness and loss. Be careful because you can't judge speed when it's silent but I would highly recommend giving it a try. It's like living in your own private Idaho!

The problem is that you have to be pretty fit and chances are, if you're just learning this at 40+, you're probably riding in the first place to get fit.
@spas_minkov3 жыл бұрын
@@springbloom5940 I am 38, and although I've been riding for more than 20 years, bmx as a teen, mtb for the past 10, I've never managed to do manual. Most people struggle with balancing, I struggle with getting to that point. I am not affraid to ride fast DH, with jumps, but the moment my front wheel gets a foot or so in the air, my brain gets in panic mode. The more I try, the more my panic reaction gets imprinted into my brain. So it is not a matter of try, and being older without manual skills, does not mean you are not experienced and fit. The first tip, learn to loop out is not relevant to me, because I cannot fall on my back even on a bmx. Part if the problem, I think, is that I am quite short, 5'5" with short arms and legs.

Yes! Great bits of advice! I learned manuals 20 years ago when I was 15 and I'm still learning every day I go out for a ride. I'd only add one thing: always give your brain and your body a break each 10 min of practice. Stop for a minute or distract yourself doing something different. Your entire body uses this moment to "metabolise" what you've practiced and right after it puts the new information into work.
@JoyOfBike3 жыл бұрын
Super good add! I try not to ever do the same thing longer than 20 min and on the BMX it’s usually a lot less because there are so many potential distractions with other features. I think a vid that’s about all these little learning hacks would be great.

I'm only 24 and can manual pretty well, but I still loved this video! I hope I'm as cool as you guys when I get older. But honestly, I'm not a believer in learning with a small bike - for two reasons: On a larger bike (Trail or Enduro) the correct technique is much more important and you will have to learn it first in order to manual at all, where as with the small bike you can sort of cheat yourself and get away with improper technique that won't work on the big bike. Second, a bigger bike is heavier and has a longer wheelbase and thus will react slower to your inputs when balancing. It will feel less snappy and you could say that is more forgiving to beginners.

Looping out when trying to learn the manual (at an advanced age) is the best advice I have yet seen in any how-to-manual tutorial. For weeks I was too afraid to lean back and use the brake to save me from falling on my back, because my 50-year-old brain kept reminding me of like 5-10 things that might happen if I fail. I went even one step further and practiced looping out in a freshly mowed meadow that still had all the hey laying around. That was "save enough" for my brain to finally let me lean back, lift that handlebar and kick out. It took me about 2 hours to finally get it done smoothly, but that's a big accomplishment for me. Now it's on to step 2...

Great vid…thank you. 48 going on 49 next month and just learning. No tailbone landings yet. From another helpful vid on mastering looping out before mastering manuals or bunny hops, keep legs bent so you can push away/jump off and land on your feet. If your legs are straight as you loop out, you won’t have anything to spring you off the pedals and it’s anyone’s guess if you’ll get your feet under you in time. Hope that helps.

I committed to learning manual last April on my 29er. I practiced almost daily (~30min). Never tried once to loop out. I learned to squeeze the rear brake when needed instead. Manuals are easier at speed and you do NOT want to loop out at speed. Feathering the rear brake is also not needed. You can balance with your hips. I am 43 years old ex-basketball player. It is learnable skill, it just takes MONTHS of consistent practice. My progress can be seen in my (only) video here on youtube. I am now 300ft manual capable 😉

I'm 45 and can "manual" my trail bike while playing around on small drops and crossing streams/mud etc. But as I'm riding with my kiddo I want to really learn classic "kid" tricks and finally bit the bullet and bought a BMX. It takes so much less effort that I could really play around with speed and shape of my hip motion, how to keep my arms locked straight, practice looping it out, and then do rep after rep to gain consistency. It is such a cheap bike to add to the quiver and such a great learning platform that I can't believe I didn't get one sooner. (We'll see if I still agree after I inevitably get curious about learning 180s...) Across all your videos, the technical discussion about how the body movement should be and how the hinge and row/anti-row is incorporated into so many aspects of biking has really helped my understanding so I can provide solid instruction for my kid. He is smooth above his bike because you guys showed me what to emphasize and to make up games to target those sensations with him. As a dad watching my kids skills seemingly magically appear, thank you. Finally, thank you all for showing unrepentant joy while learning and playing and staying free of any toxic machismo that is all too common. That vibe is critical to keep learning and exploring while knowing that we are far more breakable than 10 or 20 years ago.

Now that I'm almost 40 and been riding bikes my whole life to this day I think back on how many toe nails I've ripped off, how many times landing on my tailbone which really sucks still feeling it now, and knocking the wind outta myself from landing flat on my back... All these memories come back while watching this

I rode bmx for 24 years like an obsession till I was 35 and I was not good at it for the amount of time i put in it. But I enjoyed the shit out of it. Manuals were a long term enigma till I tried no pull manuals, that was a game changer. If you haven’t tried them, you slide back arms fully extended and gently push the bike with your legs away from you, it doesn’t take much. This also got my hops as high as ever very consistently and easily. The balance point on a mtb is waaaay bigger and easier to stay in comparatively. Although the nose manual it a bit harder on mtb to get locked into, but still fun to do. For whatever reason I could do long nose manuals before regular manuals on the bmx. I’m getting to teach my son all this fun stuff to my son, watching these in structural videos are helping me convey all that experience efficiently. Great video, keep having fun!

Nose manuals so hard. Wow!!! I’ll try that no pull tomorrow. I was doing something similar to try to manual in a fakie. Welcome to the channel brother!!

As someone who broke my back learning to manual, I have a PSA: Do not do this on pavement. Do it on grass/dirt. Sure, he jokes about having a pillow, but I now ride with a back guard.

Great video, the manual kinda ended me a bit, I’m 46 and was at the park practicing manuals, I looped out really hard and just felt a shock wave go through my body that pushed all the wind out of, long story short, an MRI later I have two herniated discs in my back which are bulging and touching the nerves which serve my foot, permanent burning and pins and needles in my foot and low level back pain, if I’d watched this video first I honestly don’t think I would of looped out so hard or would of saved it, when my discs eventually realign I’m trying again 👍

Perversely, it's much more inspiring to hear, "It took me three years," than, "It took me three days." I'm gonna fetch my Onza down from its storage hooks tomorrow, give it a service, and get out there. Thanks guys!

When I turned 45 last November I decided do reactivate my BMX and learn to manual during winter season. It´s great fun practicing in our street. And besides it´s kind of a workout - after half an hour I am completly soaked. I wanted to show my progress in my KZbin Channel but since I am not really progressing... Anyway, I am glad to came across your channel. It will motivate me to get on my bike tomorrow. Hopefully.

So I am 40, a infantry veteran who was crumped in Afghanistan and had a few surgeries. Just got back into mtb after I bought myself a hardtail a few weeks back. Was riding mx and enduro racing before my deployment. However, I just watched this vid, replayed it for my 10 year old son, then went and told my wife we need a bmx each. Now we are going to take the day off to go look at bikes tomorrow so we can beat the Xmas rush ha! My 3 year journey begins tomorrow! Because seriously, who doesn’t want to know how to manual like a boss!

I'm 57 and still have my mongooses from the 70's....I was a wheelie monster back in the day. I never learned to manual and tried it recently only to conclude that I'd never be able to. Thanks to your honest and informative videos I believe I can teach myself to. Thanks you guys!
@notsean993 жыл бұрын
so from a guy who rode wheelies and a mongoose in the 70s (before they were a Walmart) brand, what is the difference between "riding a wheelie" and doing a manual (if I said that right)
@JoyOfBike3 жыл бұрын
Wheelies are seated and peddling. Manuals are standing and no peddling.

Just bailed yesterday trying to manual, but just made sense of it now: I tried saving with one foot only and fell to the side, almost twisted my ankle, hope I'll avoid a replay with your tips. Thanks for everything man, been riding for 3 months and your channel has been very important on my journey...don't guess I would stick to cycling if I wasn't able to do some tricks, your bunny hop video with Lee truly changed everything. PS: That "do the bunny hop" song has truly stick to me, I'm always humming it lol.

I’m 38, I mostly Mtn bike on a 2013 Jamie XC. I do everything I can to treat it like it has playful geometry, but the bike itself is limited and I’m not quite there yet where I can pay for the full suspension. So I found an amazing deal on a used STLN recently and I bought it to help build more foundational skills in anticipation of buying a full suspension this year. But I’m not 14 anymore so I don’t have that friend network, and it’s not like there’s a bunch of other dads around who are trying to BMX. So I am totally happy to see that popping the bike out and landing on both feet is an indication that I’m on the right path as far as learning to manual. I’ve been doing just that and it’s felt a little frustrating but this just made the context of what I’m doing totally different and I’m more motivated now. Thanks guys!

The other positive is each time you do it you move through the balance post. A lot of people waste time practicing manuals that are never near the balance point. Keep shredding!!!

That was an awesome video. I’m in my 46, have been riding for 41 years now, can’t manual to save my life. ‘Never could get it. That, and a pedal kick always eluded me. Great advice. Especially to learn to bail correctly at first. I’ll give ‘er a crack. Cheers!
