Very cool setup - while the idea makes perfect sense to me, I would've never figured it out myself if I needed to make a spiral (in particular the attention to the universal joints). Minor nitpick: At 4:56, that is not actually what a helix looks like from the side, a sine shape would be more accurate. A way to see this is to consider a point moving along the helix at constant speed (like the tool when threadcutting), then in the perspective on the right, it would be moving down at constant speed and swinging left and right sinusodially (since it would be tracing out a circle as seen from above), which will trace out a sine shape. But it was clearly meant as a side note anyway and doesn't really matter, and the important points were all clear.
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks alot for point that out. Those lines should be the tangent lines not the actual curve of the spiral. For more precise the whole helix is a smooth space curve. Only look like a sine in 2d perspective. I was trying to bring you the relationship of spiral & thread. Lucky me they're pretty much on point. So this's the example of always double check anything from the internet 😆.
@hadinossanosam4459
@hadinossanosam4459 2 жыл бұрын
@ True, the sine only appears in 2D (in particular orthographic) projection. And the point about threads and spirals being similar came across pretty well in my opinion, and that's really what matters here

Honestly as a native English speaker who interacts with a lot of people from South East Asia, your pronunciation is one of the clearest I’ve heard. Yes you have an accent but everything you said was clearly understandable which is tough to do with technical speech. Aside from that thank you so much for the detailed explanation of your amazing work. I always jump on your videos when they come out and I can’t wait to see what you do next.

Very nice built. I don't know if it really matters (probably not so much because the result obviously works), but these universal couplings (cardan mechanism) introduce some inconsistencies. They do not transfer rotational speed constantly over the circumpherence.

So, there's another project for Cà Lem: make some small constant velocity joints. 😀
@standardtoaster10000
@standardtoaster10000 2 жыл бұрын
That's the first thing I thought when I saw the setup, its pretty good (good enough for a chuck since the inconsistencies would be equally spaced) but not suitable for high precision work like if he was making a scroll compressor.

If the angle in both ends is kept the same, it will be very close.
@d00dEEE

@@MF175mp Yup, he mentions that at the end of the video. Hooke joints' accelerations cancel when the end shafts are parallel and the joints are in phase. If you want to run in a non-parallel config, say to hob a helical gear, then you need CV joints, no way to make a Hooke work.
@pieterpan

Trust me, anyone that's advanced enough to be trying to mill a flat spiral square acme thread groove doesn't need to hear anything anyway. They just need to get a glimpse of the right moment in the process that they can't get their mind wrapped around quite tight enough lol. Your English is fine anyway so I wouldn't worry about that, though I'd try explaining things less of just with fewer words in general just because most people don't absorb information like that. Least not ppl that are more mechanically or artistically inclined, and this may be machine shop, but what you're doing is no less art even if its mechanical art. You'll make a wicked engineer and of that I have no doubt!
