How to Mark Queens - How to Mark a Queen - Marking Queen Bees - Should You Mark Queen Bees
In this video I show you how to mark queens. Marking queen bees is a quick and simple process and really helps when it comes to swarming season and you need to find the marked queen bee.
Should you mark queen bees or leave them unmarked is up to you, but you will be very happy that you marked mated queen bees when the colony is trying to swam or you want to split your beehive using a mated marked queen bee.
When to mark a queen bee depends on the queen marking colours you are using. There is a queen colour marking system in place that denotes the year that the marked queen bee was mated.
Marking queen bees with an oil based pen such as a TOMA will help the paint stay on the marked queen bee for much longer than a water based paint.
If you are interested in how to mark a queen or how to mark a queen bee then this video gives you clear simple guidance for how to safely mark a queen bee.
Black Mountain Honey is a No Nonsense Beekeeping Channel.
We are based in North Wales and manage around 150 colonies of bees, plus nucleus colonies.
We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.
Our 6 frame overwintered nucleus colonies sell out very fast every year so early ordering is advisable.

We supply F1 Mated Buckfast Queens throughout the season. These are genetics used by the UK's biggest bee farmer - Murray McGregor - and are not available to general public, except through resellers like us! Check out our queens page on our website.

We cover all beekeeping topics ranging from queen rearing, disease recognition/control, honey extraction, swarm management/collection, how to make splits and much more!
My personal favourite aspects of beekeeping are selecting queens for rearing, rearing queens for mating, making up nucs for overwintering and collecting swarms.

Thanks for this. I can't see the red pen on a queen either. I now know how to use a queen cage properly.

I got me some oil pins I'm going to try. If it doesn't work there's a big Queen breeder said by oil based model paint and use a small piece of grass are a small stick and put the drop on her back

Good video 👍 What's the name of the pen? And what type of gloves are those? I've got the thick rubber gauntlets but they look like they'd have a bit more feel than the rubber do.

It's a TOMA pen. They are sentinel pro gloves. Made of leather but not totally sting proof. Glad you enjoyed the video.

What to do if the new queen has not mated? How long should I wait? It has been 3 weeks since she emerged, but we have had terrible raining weather so there haven't been a lot of opportunities. However, I am curious what to do with this virgin queen that hasn't mated and how much longer should I wait. It is very painful to think I should just kill her and move on. Any suggestions would be great.

I just pin her down with my finger and thumb, just behind her back, mark and release. It only takes five seconds, and you wont hurt her because you can feel the pressure in your fingers much better than a cage.

Thank you for the video. I like that you took care with her - sorry for the squashed dead on the edges of what looks like a Styrofoam box. You start out your video by saying try this oil based pen - I never tried it before but it should work - well how do we both know if it actually worked??? May I suggest you come back in 3-6 months and add edit or comment to the video to say 6+ months on still good - OR oops, it looks like she died of toxicity :( - oh and maybe give that be suit a wash! some of the black mountain has gotten all over it. :)

Pen worked great. Don't use anything else now. Stays on for years. Suit gets washed once a week. Stains don't come out. Its a commercial suit that takes a beating week in week out.

Today I was trying to catch the queen for marking from a swarm I caught a few days ago and she took off. Will she return to the hive or is she most likely gone? I'll try to find her tomorrow. Thanks
