We live in a rural area where eggs are sold typically for $2 a doz, organic are $4.50 a dozen. Due to the cost of feed and upkeep, we charge $3 a dozen and cannot keep up with demand. I talk up our chickens on social media so everyone in the area knows we have them and it has been very beneficial to reducing our costs.

+Suttons Daze Same here. We are small-time homesteaders, but since it is so rural its hard to get $3/doz customers. Because we buy feed and sell for 2$/doz., so sales offset the cost of feed just a bit. Even though my family consumes some eggs, the hobby doesn't exactly pay for itself. We do it because we love it and have set a goal to grow our own grain/herbs to supplement free our free-ranging hens.

Suttons Daze we sell ours 3.5 a dozen but most of our customers want 18, so it's 4.5 but we give deals for repeat buyers for 3$ and 4$.

Suttons Daze or all of you really. Where I live $4 a dozen is top price. How are you making a profit or even breaking even selling eggs while feeding high quality food. Even if I buy bulk food I could not break even at $3 a dozen. Patara if you see this I would like to see a video on turning a profit from chickens.

Some ideas are free range, save on feed by letting chickens forage. If you can't or won't do that, pluck weeds or share greens from the veggie garden. We grow collards, can't eat them as fast as they grow, so I pluck leaves daily for rabbits and chickens. Grow fodder if you are so motivated... it's easy, but I've got a lot of irons in the fire now, so I don't. Use a chicken tractor-google search how to build one. Feed both cooked table and raw prep scraps, or slightly spoiled food... there is no food group chickens won't consume, what they don't eat goes to deep compost in a chicken coop situation. Some people I know will dilute quality feeds with cheaper feed, like adding corn or oats. You can also feed chickens from an earthworm, or mealworm farm. I've also seen videos on "growing" a maggot bar. Sounds gross, but this is what chickens eat in the "wild", by choice.

I know you did this in 2015 but eggs go for $8 a dozen at our local farmers markets and they sell out fast. I don't know that I would pay that much. Lucky I have 10 wonderful egg layers. Love your videos.

I started in 2021 with 3 chickens I now have 45 chickens and 14 chicks at the age 11. I run my little business and sell to local businesses and local costumers. I’m now starting some meat chcikens

I agree 100% on each and every point. On my eggs I write the name of the hen (if known) who laid it, along with the date. Customers like knowing the name of the hen, they really get a kick out of that. They also like the size differences, from extra small, to extra large. One customer was thrilled to have an extra small, to use as an egg wash when baking. She said it was just right, without being too much. :)

This was good teaching ! you are right about keeping the nest good and clean. When I first started out, if you didn't the chickens would even look for another place to lay their eggs. A cleaner nest means a cleaner egg. I also sell cheaper,for me it's about joy of being able to share. Thanks so much for all you share with us.

Thank you! We are in Maryville and just starting out. My wife sells our eggs at work, but we are expanding and investing in our flocks. Organic/free range chicken eggs aren’t cheap. I don’t think a lot of people understand the cost and labor involved with raising quality chickens.

Feed costs are up to $22.00 / bag for Layer Pellets, $30.00/ bag for black sunflower seeds. 🌻 so I gave my eggs away for several months. Then realized they really want wanted to pay for the eggs to keep them coming. So, people just started giving me cash when I delivered the eggs. Usually from $3.00 to $5.00 is what I get per dozen. I provide approximately 10 families with fresh, free range eggs. Some eggs are extra large, some small, most are Grade A Large. In cold weather the eggs are a bit smaller than in the summer.

I clicked on a link from HOMESTEAD HONEY and it took me straight to this video-which I've watched before of course. hmmm. nonetheless trying to expand our customer base is frustrating. everything is word of mouth and we seem to always have a dozen or so with us; I don't want to do this forever (we go to hospital quite a bit & several customers are there). how do we market other than word of mouth? ooo yeah I LOVE the clogs you are putting out for raffle;) chicken farmer son would love those (surgery Friday to put in dialysis ports, he's stage 5 kidney failure & chickens have become his life lol)

Hi! I was wondering if you can tell me about the inside of your nesting boxes. I want mine to be cleaner and not as many cracked ones. My boxes are made of wood and when I put shavings etc...they just scrape it out. They don’t even like their boxes for some reason. Do you use liners? If so could you tell me what kind? In my area you aren't allowed to sell washed eggs beacouse the protetic cover is destroyed after the washing and this is a disadvantage interms of the time that you can keep them in the fridge

Hi big fan of your page! Have a huge question. We have had a rooster in our yard all summer. He came from neighbors. They do not care or want him😢so with that being said my husband and I made him a wonderful shelter coop-small barn. HE WILL NOT GO IN!!! I can not catch him and he sleeps about 30 feet up a tree. I heard that the Maran was bread to produce an egg that is high in antioxidants and low in cholesterol. Do you know if that is true? Patara keeps her eggs on the counter until sale day. She washes them the day she will sell them. Then she packs them in coolers to sell that day. It sounds like she delivers eggs twice a month.

Excellent video! I'm curious about something though. Do you have to refrigerate your eggs after collecting them or if you leave them un-washed, can they sit outside of the refrigerator? Also, how would I remain completely organic? I'm planning to google how to become certified organic chicken mommy but I'm totally new to this. I have been watching wonderful videos for months and I haven't even gotten my lady chics yet but I'm almost done with building my Taj Mahal coop (Yes, I think I went way overboard but I want them to have a nice living space..LOL!) so I will soon have chics to put in brooder and then eventually in their coop. My rooster, Colonel Sanders (HAHAHA), will finally have some girlfriends too! :) I just think I want to be strictly organic but not sure how to go about it.

A new law in Massachusetts just went into effect that all chickens must have 18"x18" for laying their eggs. Now our eggs cost twice as much. Eggs are now the same price as ground beef and bacon. Even the regular eggs that used to be .99. These regular eggs are now like 3.99

For myself I don't, but I work in a large city, and you know city people, everything has to be done their way, so the ones I sell, I refrigerate, unless they ask that they not be. I try to accommodate them. Thanks for the answer!

Hi Patara, all. Can anyone help with this question? I have a Wyandotte hen and 2, two week old chicks sequestered, but very visible to the rest of the flock. Yesterday, I noticed a bunch of feathers in her area. She's missing feathers around her lower neck and about her back/romp area. Is she molting, bored?? What's the deal? My husband and I have only had chickens for a year. So, this is all new to us. Thanks y'all.

Best feed is bugs out in the yards and field. Giving them bagged feed gives eggs an off taste. Chickens eating fresh grass clippings,bugs and yes even a mouse or two gives them a better taste! Anyhow that is what the customers say!!

Tried to get my family to start saving egg cartons before my chicks ever arrived. Did they? No. Now I’m getting a dozen per day and will have to go to the added expense of buying new cartons. Guess it’s time to start selling my girl’s labor of love.
