In this video let's talk about a very cool, often not mentioned aspect of playing which can REALLY dramatically improve your saxophone sound in a very simple way.

Nice ... Like I say to people who want to give up smoking. DON'T TRY to give up, say as from (whenever) I DO NOT SMOKE. Then if you light one up you've failed and we don't like to do that even if it's only in our own head. Thanks for all your help, it make a big difference.

Maybe a boring subject, but can you talk about how to hold the saxophone and posture. I'm a petit female znd I've always played my alto saxophone with the body of the saxophone to the right of my legs (as if I was playing tenor maybe?) I was never taught to play with the saxophone vertical in front of me (like the play you play). Over the years, I've noticed that this "bad habit" is limiting my playing: my shoulders are tense, I'm slightly hunched over which constricts my throat, jaw and diaphragm. Also, my hands and fingers end up tense and sore. After playing for about half an hour my left thumb gets tingly and sometimes goes numb. I've had different neck straps over the years, but my alto has always felt heavy and cumbersome. I've seen kids learning to play and using a harness like what an adult would use to carry the weight of a baritone. Maybe something like that would make my alto more comfortable? Any advice on good posture and ways to adapt to different body shapes, sizes and abilities would be really interesting.

Sounds logical: If You wanna sound like a master, do not play like a learner. Or, how Master Yoda sais: DO OR DO NOT. THERE IS NO TRY! But I'm as far from being a master as a beginner can possibly be. So I'll be not able to follow (or even try to) this advice at least for a few Years... Hmm... Am I, really? I mean: If I practice a not too difficult song over and over and over, maybe I can switch off the "practice mode" way earlier (at least on this one specific song) so the ice between "practice mode" and "fun/play mode" can be broken before it becomes a massive ice plate. (hope You know what I mean... the first Song I'm on to learn (since today) is "Ain't no Sunshine". Let's see in some weeks or months, if I can break the ice with this beautiful song...) But I do not abstain to have fun anyway, even as a bloody beginner! At least once per practice session I allow me to freak out for some minutes. Playing as much out of tune and beat as possible, play shrill(*) and loud tones, make NOISE, go mad! And then focus for the next exercise... I do much long tone exercises, about 40-60% of my daily practice hour. That needs discipline, but i think it will pay off soon! (* eg: play a low Bb as loud as a cruise ship horn. So loud, that some acoustical interferences build - and then control their speed/beat. Or push the octave key while playing the loud low Bb... The moment the shrill tone hovers between the octaves can be expanded with some practice - it can even be controlled to come closer to one or the other octave, but not totally "lock" to a defined tone. (Doing that on my YAS-280, Standard 4C Mouthpiece and soft 1,5 Reed) Sounds like Annie Lennox in the 80's!!
