Ok I haven't seen that technique since the '70s, and it was rare then, but a few custom home tapers I knew would do the whole house with a horsehair brush and their fingers as you show. Never saw a prettier more consistent texture wall by wall, room by room than they would put down. Excellent Video, thank you.

Thanks, this works perfectly! I watched a number of video's on how to do knockdown texture. I followed the instructions with a paint roller and it just didn't work, neither did the sponge (they didn't say it was a special sponge!). The can reviews were poor. I'm doing many small patches so I didn't want to make a mess flicking but dabbing it on with my fingers was so easy and worked well the first time.

I have watched around 50 videos for drywall and ceiling patches in the last few days. It is surprising how many of them don't discuss the type of mud used for the various steps in each project, such as what to use for prefill, what to use for taping, what to use for skimming and / or topping, and what to use for knockdown. The presenters tend to use industry lingo which is another homework project (such as skimming and topping, are they the same?). I really appreciate this video, it's one of the best I've seen yet. Thank you.

This is a cool technique. I might have to try it as I'm trying to match that exact same knockdown texture over a poorly done patch job by a previous owner. I've been trying to match it with a dedicated knockdown sponge but the sponge can't do the small dots in between the larger splats that mimic a professional spray job. I've also been using all purpose green mud, but it sounds like the 45 minute hot mud might have a better standout. Thanks for posting the video!

Using a quick set mud over a drying mud laminates it and looks like shiners with the right light even after painted I’d never do my texture with a setting mud says in bag don’t use for skim for a reason texture is sweet af idk if I’d use this though I’m pretty good with my hopper it’s all bout finger control and mixture . And knowing how to aim it good .. if it’s more spread out just use bigger opening lil less air and soon as u hit trigger be moving it and let off fast works good

I did this successfully!!! Note: Cover the walls and the ceiling... flicking has a long trajectory! Also, cover your face and head!! :) My results were a solid B. It is slightly thicker than the knockdown adjacent to my patch, but I'm the only one who noticed. Thanks for the awesome video. I used the Homax knockdown knife (like $6 at Home Depot), and it worked well. I practiced first on a piece of scrap drywall, but of course, you're not standing under it during practice. :)

Wow. I am impressed. I want to master this technique. I couldn't really tell how you were flicking it because the fingers were moving to fast. I have found the store bought spray can does not produce big enough globs of mud. And the sponge method doesn't work either if you are trying to match a knockdown where the globs are spaced out a bit. Thanks

Thanks for the videos, very informative and appreciated! My dilemma: I'm a newbie at creating ceiling finishes, and I have a 20" x 40" section of ceiling in my GF's house that I've patched (after watching your videos, thanks!) but now have to match the finish/skim coat. It's some variation of knockdown finish but I can't find any YT videos that clearly show any knockdown that is very similar to what I have. Question: Is there an online "drywall / ceiling / plastering forum" where I can upload photos of my ceiling finish, and where someone could see it and tell me exactly how to replicate that specific finish? Any help wld be much appreciated, thank you! PS: I don’t have any special equipment like a spray gun or plaster finish sprayer. Just the regular hand tools, sponges, a Homex can of knockdown texture spray (which doesn’t seem to apply anything nearly as thick as what I apparently need) etc.
@Calcoro Жыл бұрын
Everything comes down to how dense the knockdown is on the ceiling. The denser it is, the bigger the globs of drywall mud you need to put on the ceiling. Lighter is less so. I've had mixed success using a drywall sponge, but on large surfaces it gets dicey because it'll start setting up on one end while you work on the other end. I would give this guy's method a shot on a scrap piece of drywall, but experiment with different "densities" of mud splatter.
