I live in a very cold and rainy climate with a very short summer. My go to’s to move quickly in and out to enjoy the garden are foldable lounge chairs and hammocks. Planting geraniums and mint keep wasps and mosquitos a little at bay. I’m jealous of your California weather! Although I feel for you all having to deal with wild fires, mud slides and earthquakes! Not fun!

I’m going to make a wheelie bin shelter as the best place for them is near a bedroom window. There’s 4 bins and they tend to get blown over in the strong winds off the paddocks. Also have plans to make the garden beds have straight lines to make the lawn easier to mow.

@@JulieKhuu When I hear a big thump outside on windy days (and allowed to do whatever I like now I’m single) I’m looking at what I can do to make life easier and don’t have to chase rubbish at the speed of light in the mud. The rubbish is going at the speed of light. Me, well a little slower!

Hi Julie I remember your yard when you first put in the faux grass for the children to have a soft place to play. Soon you will be putting all that plastic curbside or donate to neighbors. I added a small patio with a sunsetter awning. It created an outdoor room which was highly used during lockdown. A folding round wrought iron table with mismatched wrought iron chairs and a small metal bench and suspended egg chair were all I could fit. I bought forest green sunbrella cushions for all the chairs and bench from plow and hearth. The awning has lights but they are not the right white. But are dimmable. So I supplement with hanging lights and even multi colored Christmas lights! I like the idea of a sectional but have found the table and chairs better for my kids bc they would play board games at night and have their drinks and chips and phones. I also had to put out mosquito repellents. I used candles and tiki torches and gave them spray. If you can fit a small sectional and a table and chairs that’s best for them. Thank you Margaret! I had a huge loungey sectional before- but it was plastic wicker and buckled after 10+ years. Donated that and got the white aluminum set- which we barely use. Now it’s time for the next transition! Excited to see how it all comes together! We still LOVE our turf in the courtyard btw - best decision I made for our fam 💚

I think you should try and do both. My backyard isn’t huge, but we’re putting in a pergola (4ft x 12ft) along our east facing wall to shade us during the summer mornings when the sun gets intense, for lounging and having coffee. I’m also putting in a table nearby, for later in the day, for eating barbecue. It’s under a tree so it’s slightly shaded. I have an area for enjoying the sun, on artificial grass. An area for the garden, with a pond. It’s a long and narrow area. 13ft x 39ft, so I divided it into segments. If you can only choose one, I’d ask what are you most likely to use it for? You can also put the pergola over a formal table. Or maybe a lounge area underneath you can just casually eat at, so you still have both options available.

Alfresco dining would be wonderful for family meals outside, coffee mornings, it makes home feel like being on holiday for me. A simple gazebo overhead with lights. We did that whilst my children were small but have now changed it to a lounge area because teens don't like eating out with us any more! And we've put a smaller bistro table in a sunny spot for morning coffees. You will make it stunning whatever you do but please share the end results!! 🏮🌺🏓

Measure the height of the jacuzzi and look for tables to support the height for functional surface space. You can try bar tops in varying heights- some of them have adjustable legs. I would nest tables and use for ambience. Think candles in hurricanes, fresh flowers, and a place to put some beverages 🍹😎

For me, lounge living space rather than for dining. I am in Virginia, however, so for me sitting outside is what I love, as I can (and do!) eat as I lounge! When it is too hot for even the overhead fan to handle on my screened in porch, (screening is essential for me, as, well, mosquitoes!) neither lounging nor dining is happening in the space.I think lounging might be more conducive to getting the girls outside to play where you can keep an eye on them. I’m not sure how the climate difference might change my perspective. If it is too hot to sit outside for any length of time, maybe dining and entertaining in the evening would be better. Also if you have found that your family hasn’t used the space the way you had it set up before, go with trying dining for a while!

I feel like I need a pergola to help shade the space then I can figure out a living/dining situation!! I can taste that alfresco dinner now! 😛

It's only big enough for two chairs, but the ones I've tried either disintegrate or are so hot, no one wants to sit on them. I do like your idea of white or light cushion so that fading isn't such a big issue. Our backyard pool area isn't nearly so difficult to furnish.
