How To Measure Fetal Head Circumference (HC) On Ultrasound | Biometric Parameters | Obstetric USG
Identify the Fetal Head: Locate the fetal head on the ultrasound image. The head is often round and well-defined.
Positioning: Ensure that the fetus is in a neutral position, and scan the skull in a transverse plane.
Measurement Plane: Identify the optimal measurement plane for the head circumference. This is usually at the level of the thalami and cavum septi pellucidi.
Calipers: Use electronic calipers on the ultrasound machine to measure the outer edge of the fetal skull in a cross-sectional view. The calipers should be placed at the widest points of the skull, encompassing the circumference.
Record Measurement: Record the head circumference measurement in millimeters. This measurement, along with other biometric measurements such as biparietal diameter (BPD) and abdominal circumference (AC), can be used to estimate fetal weight and assess growth.
Repeat Measurements: It's often recommended to take the measurement a few times to ensure accuracy and consistency.
Interpreting the Results: The measured HC is compared to standard growth charts to assess whether the fetal size is appropriate for gestational age.
