Ok, so I now understand how to calculate this, but I’m not sure how to apply this info. I’m rebuilding a kit car on an old VW chassis and I want to change the wheels to something much larger. I know that offset is going to come into play, but not sure how. Can you advise please?

I know this is 4 years old but here’s my deal please hear me out, I have 1 mismatch wheel and I’m trying to get one to match there are two options +20 or 0 I measured mine out with a tape and came out to be +4 would it be safe to say it’s 0? My total width with the tire on is 236.5mm half of that is 118.2 and my backspacing is 122.2

Just because a wheel has a positive offset does not make it LAME. I agree lower offset wheels look better but, you can't just throw any offset wheel on any car. For example I have a 94 Supra. Stock offset is +50, if I go throw a -10 offset wheel on there, it will stick out like 2 inches past the fender, and that will look LAME and SUPER GAY! You just have to buy aftermarket wheels that are close to stock offsets.

Hi! The absolute best way is to do a test fit, but I actually think your wheels will be too aggressive in the front. The rear's SHOULD work with a stretched tire/rolled or pulled fenders, but the front you may want to reconsider! Good luck!

@throtl: technical notes/suggestions: (a) as @Lance Hayabusa mentioned, your rear right wheel chock is unnecessary at 2:48; (b) tool manufacturers recommend using a breaker bar for the initial release of the wheel lug nuts at 1:40 (c) cut 0:59 - 3:55 of your footage because the instructions on removing a wheel is unnecessary; (d) measure in metric (mm) as opposed to imperial at 5:47; (e) the equation for calculating offset is OFFSET = BACKSPACING - CENTRE but you reversed it, which is why you changed the sign from -ve to +ve at 8:00 - 8:21. Thank you for spending the time to do this. Regards.

If I have a 8.5" wheel with a offset of +52 that fits good and I put a 1" flare on the car and make a new wheel 1" wider at 9.5", to keep the same backspace would I subtract a 1/2 in mm (12.7mm) to make it fit? I know that 1" is 25.4 mm so a half inch is 12.7 mm so would the new offset be +39.3mm? I hope this is not too confusing and hope I am doing this correct. Any help would be great. Thanks

If my stock wheels are a positive offset and I’m wanting to buy some after market alloys that have the look of a negative offset deep(er) dish rim, would the aftermarkets space further out from the side of the car naturally? It would look nice if my Fitment were to look more flush without having change the suspension. The factory wheels are 17in and still showing a bit too much space between the fenders. How would I go about this sort of process being a complete rookie?

Why is the positive offset labeled "Lame"? The easy way, in many cases, would be to look at the inside of the wheel where it is printed, as the ET.(ET =Offset) You may want to mention the conversion of inches to metric (mm) is inches x 25.4. Also, for those that don't like math, there are tables that show what the offset is for a given backspace and vise versa.
@gt34627 жыл бұрын
Diehard ive been looking at wheels online they only come in +25 and + 35 for an r34 i dont know much about offset ect but to be told its lame. Whats your opinion of these 2 fitments on an 18 inch × 9.5 ??
@Diehard657 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with your car to offer an answer to your question. You should become familiar with what offset is and what it will do to the position of your wheel/tire. For example the difference between a +25 and a +35 would result in the +35 locating your inboard side of your wheel/tire 10mm(or slightly more then 3/8") closer to your suspension and inner side of your wheel well. You should find out what your existing wheel offset and width is and determine how any change, if any, would impact the current clearance. There are many web sites that show you the difference when you change wheel and/tire sizes. Here's one I like... www.wheel-size.com/calc/?wheel1=275-40-20X9.5ET18&wheel2=305-35-20X9.5ET18&fcl=50mm&scl=25mm&wcl=30mm&sr=0mm

The wheels don’t give you negative camber. Your suspension does. It depend how your car is set up, but on most cars you buy a camber kit and extend it. Usually you could get that taken care of, when you get your car aligned.
