Megging a motor is a term used to test a 3 phase motor to check the resistance and condition of the motor windings using a megohmeter. These type of motors produce an electrical charge to conduct a resistance reading. If there is a low amount of resistance in Megohms then the motor may need to be serviced or replaced. This test used for preventative maintenance.

What about phase winding isolation and testing phase to phase insulation?

Phase to phase windings are connected together at each motor terminal and are very low resistance. As for "phase-isolation", if you are referring to the windings staying insulated apart from each other, that would be done with an Inductance and milliohm meter. This Video was to demonstrate using a Megohmeter to test a motor that is all.

Hi There, great video. I was wonder if you can answer this question. I don't have a megger for testing 3 phase motor. However I am testing phase to earth and getting a reading of 1.000 ohms. Is this normal? I was taught that I should not get any reading on ohms going from phase to earth. I am getting mixed information in the field. Any info would be appreciated.

That sounds like a bad reading to me. Compare that measurement to the other phases/coils.

Some Megger's can generate a lot of voltage. He probably has a 1000volt range on it and it might make the worms want out of the ground if it is shocking them, eh?

Generally? Seriously? What about Phase to phase readings? A lot of motors can't be megged to ground. Only phase to phase. Ohmeter for ground fault.

Well a Megger is only for phase to ground testing. To do phase to phase you will need a very different piece of equipment. Capable of measuring very low resistances and inductances. A 1HP 3 phase AC motor will have some measurable ohms phase to phase and should be balanced with in 10% or less (a new motor may measure less than 5% variation). At about 10HP and up, you will measure less than 1 ohm of resistance phase to phase.

GalcoTV. You CAN megger phase to phase. Just lift 3 of the 6 tails and test away. But it's rare to bother with this procedure. Cos normally just megger the whole unit and it's either a pass or a fail.
