Thank you Ashley! I use chords all the time when I'm playing out but sometimes i get confused on the Augmented and Diminished chords. This helped a lot!

Thanks for explaining and showing the cord structure's. I have been playing keyboard's for a very long time, but I play by ear, but usually anything that I listen to a few times, I can play it 90 percent of the time. I have also been playing the cords you are showing, but I didn't know what they were called. Your video is helping me out a lot. Thanks for sharing your knowledge in a way that is easy to follow

One piece I have always loved is Henry Mancini's Shadows of Paris. I have searched in vain for a full piano score but I did find a lead sheet. I have previously fought shy of using lead sheets because I didn't know how to play them but I had no choice on this occasion. Learning this piece, which is in Ab major, I found that the third bar starts with a Db but the chord is C7 which doesn't feature a Db. Looking through many pieces I see that it is fairly common for a chord to be used which doesn't feature the note being played. I would be grateful if anybody could explain why they do this. Thanks PS Sorry if this post has been duplicated, I posted it earlier and it seems to have disappeared.

Sure! With chords it’s more of an art than a science. Accord can be implied harmonically, even if there are only two notes of the cord present. When this is the case, you are using other context, clues like the key signature of the piece, the cord that comes before, and after, etc.

@@AshleeYoungMusicStudio Hi Ashlee, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to my question. I tend to like things to follow a logical course, so the melody note not appearing in the chord baffled me. Thanks to your explanation it makes perfect sense now. I have always been able to play sheet music so never really had the need to study chord structure. Because the chord markings were usually shown as guitar symbols I had lazily assumed they were for guitar accompaniment! Your brilliant videos have opened up a whole new field of music to study. Thank you so much.
