Thanks for this. It was incredibly helpful. I had nice stable RT2200ac + 5 MR2200ac AP set up. Having updated everything to 1.3.1 -9346 Update 3 and dropped in the RT6600ax I am now living in "interesting times". Having any more than 2 APs seems to lead to an unstable situation in which the APs are constantly syncing. 4 APs means syncing fails and all the APs disconnect at which point I can hear my wife, two kids, dog and hamster all start howling simultaneously.

Excellent directions! Took a while to get into the wifi point srm. IP address conflicted with routers. Once in it was straight forward as in video. By the way, i Contacted customer support and had a ticket created still waiting… I would think many are running into this issue.

if i turn off auto connect and have three SSIDs is there a way to get Wi-Fi 6 devices to connect via Wi-Fi 6 inside the mesh network? it seems my speeds before re-adding the nodes to the network was faster but I really want that range around the house.

I was return rt6600ax because there is no more Cloud Station (= Synology Drive) which was very useful from rt2200ac. No reviewers mentioned about it.

Thank you very much for the video. I am going to acquire a AC6600AX and set up a mesh system with RT2600AC and MR2200AC as the Wifi-Points through ethernet backhaul. Can you please advise if I can utilise the Lan ports on the RT2600AC to hard wire some other equipment like projector, printer? What is your best suggestion on utilisng the 2.5G port? I do have a Synology NAS which I plan to connect to the RT6600AX (connect with internet) with link aggregation.

Just got the RT6600ax and the MR2200ac today. Updated the RT but the 1.3 version for the MR2200ac is STILL not out. Do you have any idea when this will be released? Out of the box this isn’t a mesh network.

Oh wow, after som digging I found out that manually updating your Syno on Safari (Mac) isn't possible! I tried it with Chrome and that works like a charm. So if you are using Safari and run into the refresh browser thing: use Chrome. Case closed!

I have a gigabit enabled NAS and pc with a non-gigabit router at the moment. If I connected both the PC and the NAS into a gigabit switch, then connected the switch into the router, would the PC and the NAS have gigabit connection read and write speed through each other? Regardless of my internet connection being 50mbps

Yes they would. Your internet speed only comes into play when you're using it.

Do you know what WIFI band the TR6600ax is using for wireless backhaul connection to the nodes?

According to what I'm seeing in my rt6600ax, there are two wireless backhaul links. One on 2.4GHz, and one on 5GHz. The 2.4 link cannot be manipulated, while the 5GHz uplink can be your choice of either "5 GHz-1", or "5 GHz-2", each of which have their own channel. I can't be certain about how both bands interact, but I assume the 2.4 link is there to help with long distances and physical obstacles as that band goes farther and penetrates walls better. The 5 link has higher frequency and throughput, at the expense of durability.

Can you check if it’s possible to assign the ports on nodes to the specific VLan? E.g. can the lan port on 2200 router set up as a node be assigned to a guest network?

The mesh nodes are to be configured as WiFi nodes only, as far as I can tell. The traffic, if using VLANs for multiple networks, is indeed tagged with the appropriate vlan as it traverses back to the main controlling unit. However, the physical Ethernet ports on a mesh node do not appear to be manually configurable on any specific tag or "guest network" if that's what you're asking.

@@sonovabeach Thanks, this is what I was looking for. In ASUS Aimesh all lan ports are always assigned to the main network. As in version 1.3 of synology firmware it is possible to assign the ports to the specific network on the main router I hoped that it is also possible on the nodes. If a node is placed in a public place I’d like to assign its ports to the guest network or even disable them due to security reasons.

Do you mean you try to install 1.3 on your mr2200ac, and then it restarts and comes up as the 1.2 version you started with?

@@jordanbeaujour4529 Are you starting with the very latest version of 1.2? If so and If it isn't a huge pain, I would maybe factory default the 2200 before flashing and shoot, maybe even be sure to upload the flash via wired Ethernet instead of WiFi.

Just a head's up to anyone trying to do this with a new RT2600ac as a mesh point on a RT6600ax... I tried setting up all my mesh points last night after picking them up on Amazon Black Friday daels, and for the life of me could not get SRM1.3 to install on the RT2600ac. It would get to 10%, reboot, and revert to SRM1.2. Apparently there is a glitch in some versions of SRM1.2 where you need to update to the *latest* version of SRM1.2 through the built-in update tool, BEFORE you can manually upgrade to SRM1.3. Hopefully this will save some people a few hours of headaches. Other than that... my mesh is now running flawlessly!

Your question might be easier to understand if you gave it some details to help understand what you're asking. Devices? Like total hosts on the LAN? On wifi? How many mesh nodes? Any of those specifics comes with a number of follow-up questions that might include usage cases, throughput, band, etc.

It’s a simple general question understood by anyone in IT. Devices are anything connecting to the Router/Mesh. Computers, cell phones, smart home, TV streamers, etc. Anyway I did get my answer direct from Synology, it’s 200.

Does the RT6600AX have a VPN kill switch?

Don't take this answer as the gospel, but I'm likely to think, no. A VPN Killswitch as I understand it, is a feature found in software based VPN clients that you install on a host, rather than the VPN router or device that handles encrypted traffic on your behalf. I would imagine that you could emulate this functionality with the creation of a separate LAN/VLAN and the appropriate firewall rules in SRM. This would take a bit of thought and finegeling, but I speculate, possible.

I've got an RT2600ac which I'm using as my primary router, with an MR2200ac in a mesh configuration. I want to add my new RT6600ax as primary and convert the RT2600ac into another mesh node. I figured he was talking about the RT2600ac to explain how best to do this. Is this thought process flawed? I'm not being a dick, I'm genuinely asking if you know something I don't!

@@PeteLehmann I tried the RT2600ac as an access point, and it's terrible, I ended up buying more MR2200's, and when using the RT6600ax as the main router, the mesh works smoothly. When the RT2600 was part of the system, there were a lot of network routing issues and slower speeds although RT2600 should be better and faster it is actually much slower.

@@silviutanase6141 That is really good to know, thank you! I've been using an RT2600ac for the last 5 to 7 years with an MR2200 with realty no issues. The RT2600 is still chugging along but now my computer AND phone keep peer pressuring me from time to time with the whole "Ya know, I would be SOOO much faster and smoother if you would only give in, come out of the stone ages, and spring for a modern WiFi6 capable Wi-Fi router. No pressure, but every second wasted due to antiquated network components, God kills a kitten. So maybe think about it?" The exact phrasing might be a little less wordy, but that's the gist! Having a Synology NAS and being very impressed with the eco-system thus far, I found the RT6600ax on the Amazons, did my part to help Jeff "It Doesn't Look Like a Penis!" Bezos a little richer, and was planning to replace the RT2600 with it and then replace the MR2200 with the RT2600, but now thanks to your experience, think I'll just go with step 1 and keep the Mr. MR2200 where he is.
