When aligning the vascular bundles, you mentioned air pockets. Would a drop or 2 of water in between them prevent that do you think?
@Lophophanatica3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the scion needs to touch the rootstock entirely. I wouldn't do that as it raises chances of your scion rotting. It is better to give it a little push and wiggle it around to push the air pockets out

Excellent demonstration, and have you tried using Schlumbergera cactus as a stock for grafting? It's plentiful and despite its thin stems and being fiddly it can surprisingly work very well, just a suggestion as I read you might try using Opuntia too 😁👍🏻🌵

Thanks man, appreciate the kind words :) matter of fact i have not, I've got 2 of those actually and thought about it once ot twice aswell,but I didn't bother because in my opinion schlumbergera are not my fastest growers so I didn't think it was worth it :) have you tried? Mind sharing some of ypur ecperiences?:) yeah opuntias are in slumber now, but once they perk up again in spring, they'll definitely get the chop :)

@@Lophophanatica I saw a video on You Tube grafting cactus Seedlings onto schlumbergera and it was very good. I had some young Seedlings at the time so gave it a try over a year ago now, just out of curiosity, but it was my first go at grafting then and they fell off and wouldn't stick onto the thin stems! 🤣 well I might give it another go now I'm a bit more clued up just to see if it will work second time round but on the same hand I'm not a massive fan of grafting but in some circumstances it does serve a purpose which I think is great as well for those cactus especially notoriously hard to grow on their own roots, or cactus that are so slow to grow 😉, will be interesting to see how your Opuntia grafting get on 👍🏻🌵🙂

So you don't put pressure like rubber bands or tape on the scion and they still take? I've been trying to graft seedlings onto opuntia but it's incredibly hard to apply tape or bands because of all the spines so I wonder if I should forget it and just stick it on.

"Hardening" of plants only happen when they are much older. That's not something you can dp over 3 months but rather how a plant is grown for longer periods of time. You can graft seedlings at pretty much whenever you want, it's just a question of preference.the only thing that needs to be adjusted is the rootstock.

Attempting to use aloevera as grafting glue grafting larger cactus on more established root stocks. My root stock had its tips removed in exchange for being looked after as i found a house. Some success, some not, but the successful is on a cactus that shouldn't have taken. Also, the internet takes things to far, dont need to carve up all the cactus, a slight gental trim of edges is all thats needed instead of carving the sides and leaving a ugly join, i use excessive pressure to stop the sides pushing off the graft, gives more surface area and a more aesthetically pleasing join. Im only beginning down the grafting rabbit hole so will probably prove myself wrong with my other attempts doing it by the internet book taking each step to far 😅😊
