Did you hear about inverted sugar syrup? Its better than normal syrup because its already digested by "Invertase enzyme" from sucrose (Disaccharide sugar) into fructose and glucose (Monosaccharides sugar). So, bees not have to digest sugar syrup. This simulate honey and give bees pure energy immediately and longer life specially in wintering bees.
@vinofarm6 жыл бұрын
I believe you are describing 'fondant'.
@turkyashorbarbod81676 жыл бұрын
No, It's different from fondant. fondant may break sucrose by acidic But form HMF. But when we use "Invertase enzyme" to sugar syrup we break sucrose to 50% fructose and 50% glucose without high temperature that form HMF. Example for "Invertase enzyme" brand: PCHELIT, VemoHerb Bees+, InvertoBee. Also, you can find it on eBay. This study about how Sugar syrup shortens the life of bees: resistantbees.com/blog/?page_id=1334 You can google it for more information.
@justinthibeault72126 жыл бұрын
HMF doesn't need high temperatures to form, it just happens faster when the sugar is warm. Even the temperatures in a beehive are high enough to measurably increase HMF in honey (www.fiitea.org/foundation/files/2001/Sofia%20KARABOURNIOTI,%20P.%20ZERVALAKI.pdf) Low heat (even without acid) will invert some percentage of the sugar in syrup, and the invertase produced by bees will also invert if they are storing it like you'd expect them to with 2:1. This does make me think about picking up some invertase for making 1:1 syrup though and makes me wonder if you can make 2:1 without heat if you added some invertase.

Have you observed a change in behavior in your bees when you feed them vs when you don't? I've noticed that a good number of my bees just bumble around my house (and presumably my neighbor's properties also) when the hive is on the syrup drip. It's rather annoying - particularly because I think my bees have never forgiven me for the sugar roll test I did more than a month back and they get all pissy when they find me working in their garden. So I've stopped feeding them. They are much more likable when they are worried about their food stores.
@vinofarm8 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on your climate and available nectar sources. We had an extreme drought this year. And my bees were a fresh package in an empty hive 5 months ago. Without food, they would have been starving all summer and terribly weak at this point going into winter. When I took a couple weeks off from feeding in late summer, I noticed they were the opposite of likable. They need food now to prepare for winter. Next year will be different. I will feed if they need it in late winter/early spring, but they should have the strength to get their own food all next summer.
@ianumeda8 жыл бұрын
Vino Farm , I'm curious - how far is your bee yard is from your house? Mine is about 40', not far for bees. If yours is further I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't notice if they bumbled around or not when fed. I've also got a new hive from a swarm in June so I've been feeding constantly from the beginning. Regarding your 2:1 sugar syrup recipe - i find it simpler, albeit more approximate, to just fill my container with sugar and pour in boiled water into the container until it's full with mixed syrup. The granulated sugar reduces in volume by about half thereby giving you 2:1 syrup.
@vinofarm8 жыл бұрын
Ian Umeda My hive is 150 yards away from my house. I don't see bees near the house very often. They have 6 acres of pasture and 100 acres of woods to fly in. I though I'd do the math once and for all on the syrup. After weighing everything and coming up with the recipe in the video, I looked around and did not find these numbers anywhere. A lot of people say 25lbs sugar to 2 gallons (8 quarts) of water, but that is absolutely not 2:1, by weight or volume. But hey, who cares?
@ianumeda8 жыл бұрын
Vino Farm , yes I don't think precision on bee syrup is imperative. When I weighed sugar and water I found that water doesn't weigh significantly more than sugar by volume (compared to how significantly the opinions vary on feeding bees on the Internet). The method I described allows you to easily make ~2:1 syrup for any container so you don't have to store extra syrup in your fridge and you have to clean syrup off of a minimum of utensils. At higher sugar concentrations it's probably necessary to heat the solution so much it will require a stove. Anyway, I hope I'm not hindering my bees by not feeding them. They seem really strong right now and we have mild winters here. Thanks for your thoughts and time.
@stevehappe85836 жыл бұрын
I understand the fact that sugar is not soluble in cold water. It must be heated. Not boiled, but heated to the point where it can make a simple syrup solution. But I've seen many people dump honey water after processing and cooling their wax. Can this water be used to supplement their syrup?

@vinofarm8 жыл бұрын
When feeding directly into the hive, the bees will eat some and store some. When they store it, they need to evaporate the water out of it to reduce the moisture content. By giving them a thicker mixture, they will be able to store it faster with less work, which is important as they are getting ready for winter.

The heavier syrup is easier for the bees to dry as the ambient temps drop. Too thin and syrup and there is a higher chance that the syrup will ferment...something that is best to avoid.
@harwellshoneyhive47128 жыл бұрын
I've always measured mine by volume, not by weight. So 2 cups sugar to 1 cup water. The sugar concentration at weight measure is way too high IMHO. Where did you get your reference to measure by? Just curious. It also may have to do with our climate differences. I am in NC.
@vinofarm8 жыл бұрын
I would think the higher the sugar concentration, the better. The bees need to evaporate out the excess water, so I'd rather give them any help I can. Especially this time of year with nights in the 30ºs. If you're measuring by volume, you're going to get much wetter syrup.
@harwellshoneyhive47128 жыл бұрын
That's true, but I would also think they are eating it instead of storing it so the water content would be ok for hydration as well. We are still in mid 60s at night, but starting to trend colder.
@vinofarm8 жыл бұрын
Mine are in storage mode. It's the end of year rush up here in Massachusetts.
@drrota7 жыл бұрын
Yes 2:1 is best in the fall. Once day temps get below 50F, bees can't evaporate the water. It turns into a moisture/heating liability. So below 50F is time to consider dry feed - fondant, sugar bricks, pollen patties, etc.
