Thank you so much for the lesson on mixing your own black. Many years ago I purchased my first watercolor book - Making Color Sing by Jeanne Dobie. I am so glad I learned from the beginning to mix my own blacks from complimentary colors. Your demonstration was a perfect reminder of mixing beautiful grays. I am 70 years old and am still learning. You are my favorite on-line watercolor teacher.

Wonderfully instructive video on the importance of not relying on premixed black watercolors. This is really so very important. Might I also say just how much I appreciate your humble approach to painting, admitting it is still work and requires practice after a decade of painting and for so openly sharing the delightful outtakes at the end. You exemplify the best that a tutor can bring her students! xx

Loved this one! I just finished teaching my pal all about how to mix black with many variations and these exact colours were one of the choices! When I started to paint I was taught to NEVER use paint straight out of a tube nor to EVER use black in a tube so have been mixing my own for years. Watching what lovely things you do with tube black made me question what was right or wrong or better. and now I think it is alll ok. Mix, don’t mix, add this or that it is alllllll ok. Enjoy the painting. End of story. But I have to say that I still own zero tubes of black and still mix my own as that translucent something makes mixed “ black” not quite so “dark hole”- like. Love how and what you teach. You are so special. And funnnnnYYYYY!!!!

The first black I learned to mix was pthalo green and alizarin crimson. I've been told and have read that winsor green is pthalo green. I believe it. The first time I used winsor blue I remarked that it Looks like pthalo blue then after comparing the two I believed it about both the two winsor colors. They are both pthalo. Good stuff Louise. Please keep it coming and thank you very much.

Back in the 60's, I was reading the Sword of Shannara series. The cover art, which I drooled over, was done by the Brothers Hildebrandt. I later read that they never used black, finding it dull and dead. They use purple. That has always stuck with me, and even now, I add blue or purple to my blacks and I go for payne's grey for that blue tinge. But I really like these two colors mixed for black, and the variations of green and red you get. I'm going to try this going forward. Thanks for the video!

I have just recently discovered you on You Tube and wish I had found you earlier. Your work is beautiful and your lessons so clear, well thought out and instructive. I have watched your lesson on stretching paper, but one thing you have not addressed anywhere I can find. After you have removed the painting from gaterboard, how do you remove the leftover gummed tape from the gator board so that you can reuse the board and get a good attachment? As this video is 2 years old, I’m not sure you will see this comment, but I hope you do. I might post this on your website as well. Thank you!

I went with a phthalo turq (Schminke's Helio Turq.) and Winsor Red for my black panther and I don't think I'd do that mixture again because of the stain level (not fun for me cleaning up!) but it's so fun how the red can look "too red" up close, but reads grey! (I used charcoal for the underdrawing; almost threw the thing away, but pushed through.) But this baby chicken is so cute! _Wondering if viridian and alizarin would mix up okay...!_ #Beautiful as usual!
