Thank you for this great explanation of mixing with a split-primary color palette! I understand now why I have had trouble trying to mix the secondaries that I want. I think about color in a different way now, that I think will make it much easier to mix colors when I watercolor.

Do you store your mixed colours by peeling that cling film and storing? How do you keep those wet for long?
@KevinMcCainStudios Жыл бұрын
I don't use cling film normally. This was just for the demo. Oil paint can stay wet for weeks and if you need to stay wetter longer you can add a drop of clove oil to the paint and mix it into your paint colors.

Thank you so much for this lesson! I'm relatively new to painting, and color mixing often leaves me frustrated, as it seems like I never manage to get the right color!

The notion "primary colors are colors that can't be mixed" is actually false: Phthalo Green (Blue Shade) + Dioxazine Purple makes a range of blues, and Cad Orange + Dioxazine Purple makes a range of muted reds. The correct statement would be "primary colors are the most saturated colors which can't be mixed", but that likely includes Cad Orange, Pyrrole Orange, and Cobalt Violet Light because those 3 hue saturations can't be reached by mixes.

Hello Justin thank you for your comment. This video is a quick overview for mixing colors and not a full robust course on color mixing so I didn't get into that aspect. However you are correct the statement Primary colors can't be mixed isn't accurate you can mix primary colors from secondary colors and primary from tertiary colors. Of course with mixing colors many factors change how the color mixes including the pigment load, undertone, opacity, and tinting strength. These are all factors in mixing colors. Thank you for you comments.

@@KevinMcCainStudios thanks for the reply Kevin! I likely came off as too cold/critical - text can make things sound preachy/condescending - but I have nothing but love for what you're doing!
