Terminology clarification (for the nerdies): To get color into acrylic powder, mainly two different types of colourants are used: pigments and dyes. Pigments can be derived from natural sources (e.g. minerals and clays) or synthetically produced. They don't dissolve in water or oil, so they have to be mixed well or suspended. Dyes are soluble in monomer or other solvents, so that's how they can be added to acrylic powder. Natural micas are a group of different color rock-forming minerals with a crystal structure that gives them that glassy shine. There is also a synthetic form of mica made in the lab. While pigments are indeed flat and often opaque, they can be mixed with micas to add shine.

Has anyone seen any of the documentaries on mica? I knew that mica is mined but I didn't realise that there was a big issue with it such as kids being forced to mine instead of being at school. People are paid actual pennies to do this work, usually always illegally! I use mica products daily in nail products and make up like highlighter and i've never realised the awful exploitation surrounding it! Well worth a watch on you tube! Thanks for this video, acrylic powders are super expensive and this is the answer for me!

The big companies use the same micas and pigments that we can buy..they just have a way to perfectly mix them and have scientific color to acrylic ratios...but they make us pay for it like there's some kind of magical ingredient in there lol...great video, thank you...

Hi, i use natural acrylic instead of white, it never separates. If you want a lighter color just add clear to to the natural. Enjoyed thanks Tfs.

Thank you for the information given on the difference between mica and pigment. Sometimes when I get that white pooling when I pick up a colored acrylic bead, I just flip the bead as a put it on the nail so the white is at the white and the color is on the top.

Just some added info. With pigment and mica it's also about the source. Real mica comes from a natural, and sometimes sketchy, source; involving child labor and unsustainable collection. Don't quote me look it up yourself. Pigment like she said has no shine. It doesn't include the mica dust.

There could be many reasons your powder isn't sticking. It could be your liquid to powder ratio, bad quality brush, contaminated brush, liquid temperature or yes maybe too much pigment that is not mixed properly
