Really good example session, I got a lot out of it. I'm using a Windows computer and Cyberlink Audio Director, but can take much of what you demonstrate here and apply it to my editor. Very helpful video for an amateur hobbyist that wants to learn more and more about audio for video production.

Can you do a video on what plugins are useful for mixing dialogue?
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah man! This video had a lot of what I would consider useful plugins for mixing dialogue, but I assume you're referring to a more in-depth look at dialogue processing by itself? Either way, there's not enough content on the internet about this crucial topic, so I definitely will do one again!

What if you have multiple audio clips in premiere with dialogue? It would take forever to do this process with each clip. Is there easy way to do EQ in premiere and then just copy effect on clips?

just to be picky, i notices a very resonant frequency...maybe like 2k. just sweep with a high boost and when you find a resonant frequency that does not go away no matter what the content is-cut it. boom. just a tip. great video.

My advice is when you have noisy background to use limiter instead of compressor.This is because the compressors are working bi-directional(lowers the peaks but at the same time raises the quieter(background) sounds).
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 5 жыл бұрын
Great call - that's also why I think it's important to noise reduce PRE compression as well!

@@OliverJHughes What is your thought on duplication of some parts of the track and pan them accordingly( leave the mono track for consistency but for example if somebody is talking on the right put only those parts on the right on parallel track)?
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 5 жыл бұрын
Do you mean take the same mono track, and duplicate it, hard pan L and R? I wouldn't do that - just unnecessary, plus there's always the risk of a phase issue if summed to mono - I've heard filmmakers that lose dialogue because of that when outputting from an iphone for example. Did I get that right?
@rockascreen1109
@rockascreen1109 5 жыл бұрын
@@OliverJHughes No,this for sure will cancel them when summed.My Idea is to leave one track in the center and duplicate it to the right(e.g.).

What's the difference between the stock plug-ins and third party plug-ins.
@OliverJHughes

Stock refers to whatever comes with the program - and third party would be anything you purchase and install separately to work within the program.

Great stuff I think you will be my go to guy for audio and I only watched 4 mins so far. I am sound mixing a 35 minute film so it’s nice to watch someone who clearly knows what he’s talking about... what’s the learning curve on audition like ? I am hoping to watch quite a few tutorials before subscribing.
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 6 жыл бұрын
#bless you. First question: do you edit in Premiere? If so, Audition is wonderful and the learning curve isn't too steep. If not, I wouldn't reccomend audition. It is very clumsy from a multi-track standpoint. It's excellent from a single track/roundtrip/dynamic link with Premiere standpoint. Pumped about your film!
@Therejectionartist
@Therejectionartist 6 жыл бұрын
I am editing the film in premiere pro and just need to clean up and mix the dialogue and effects, we captured pretty good audio so it shouldn't be too complicated, I might need to reduce some background noise, add music too and smooth out the audio between some cuts. I wa thinking of audition because I have so many clips on the timeline and to be honest I wouldn't even know where to begin trying to export each one of those into another audio software programme. Thanks for the reply.
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 6 жыл бұрын
The Rejection Artist yeah than you are golden to get Audition! With the dynamic link you can make real-time Audition edits that update in premiere
@Therejectionartist
@Therejectionartist 6 жыл бұрын
Great thanks, using audition is enough you think? Do you use something like izotope rx or acon? I know they aren't free, especially izotope which is pretty expensive, I doubt I will go beyond audition for this project, anyway thanks again for the reply.
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 6 жыл бұрын
One question: do you use third party mixing plugins? Like Waves, Native Instruments, or FabFilter? Either way Audition will be probably everything you need unless you need some serious repair work. Isotope products are yes very expensive but they will recover just about any type of audio issues!

Hey Oliver, if audio has floor noise and very low volume (level), is it better to normalize it first ( set volume to normal levels), then get rid of floor noise (following your tutorial), then once levels are good and noise is gone, start using compressor-EQ-limiter chain? or do you suggest always start with compressor (before noise removal)? i feel like Compressor will bring noise volume higher which we dont want before removal. Big thanks.

Thank you so much! Have been watching your videos for the last few months and they are so helpful! I have a question! So on a later part of your dialogue, there's a part which seems a lot louder than the part that you were working with in this video (looking at the waveform). I've been recording some interviews with lav mics and I get a LOT of those really loud spots when the talents are laughing. As of now,, the only solution that's working so far is to compress with a -30db threshold and then a 30:1 ratio, and then I can raise the loudness to about -23db LUFS with the true peaks around -1.5db. But I can't get to, say, -19db LUFS and not clip. Should I be using a limiter (I'm not) or recording with the lav mic farther away from the mouth or compressing in a different way? Would be great to get your opinion!
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 5 жыл бұрын
Yo man! Yeah laughs can be hard to control, but I would say you're fine with a much smaller ratio (4:1) on the compression, too much and you will just squash the signal. If the laughs are still clipping, yes use a limiter on it as well. Definitely keep that lav mic as close as possible!!! Also, try to record your levels at peaks between -20db and -12db - max peaks no higher than -6db!
@raimanenglishmusic2146
@raimanenglishmusic2146 5 жыл бұрын
@@OliverJHughes Ah! Got it! Yeah I was definitely pretty much squashing it all... but at least the listeners weren't having their eardrums blown out with the laughs. Limiter. 4:1. Got it. Thank you!

Are all those effects you applied included with Audition or did you have to buy them separately? Great tutorial btw. You should do more like these.

This will sound like a dumb question, but I just couldn't solve it... how do you "apply" the effects from the Essential Souds panel? I can hear them while I'm working on the panel, but I just can't save the edited audio file, it keeps saving another copy of the original, without any changes :(
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 6 жыл бұрын
Yo! Are you referring to the Essential Sound panel in Premiere? That doesn't need to be applied. It's an effect on an individual audio clip that will take full effect upon export of the entire project.

Does audition actually "Save" your mix in when you go to put back into Premiere? I know I will have to go back into audition and make changes again and again once client listens... Oh, and if I forgot to add lavaliere tracks or boom tracks and I already started mixing in audition, can I still go into premiere and bring just the boom or lav clip into my already semi mixed in audition?
@OliverJHughes
@OliverJHughes 6 жыл бұрын
It does save it - but it's a destructive save to the NEW rendered file out of Premiere if you're round-tripping - meaning, a new file is generated out of premiere, placed in Audition, and then sent back to premiere. So, minor tweaks will be very tedious if you need to go back and adjust later. If you're using a multitrack mix in Audition, that's different and yes you'll be able to go back and make minor tweaks no big deal - and add those missing elements without much hassle.
