Great video. I was listening to dub in front of my sp404 and wondering if it would be possible to make something similar with it. This has exceeded my expectations.
@xpaux Жыл бұрын
I suppose it's hard to get a perfectly perfect loop down to the millisecond. So what happens if the sample is slightly longer than the pattern BPM, would it skip a full bar at the end until it gets triggered again?
@andystandys Жыл бұрын
@@xpaux Yes, it does something like that. I only know because I had one sound that wasn’t the same loop length loaded one time. I couldn’t figure out why it was turning on and off at weird intervals and then I figured out that it didn’t match the loop length of the other samples.
@thomasmorus3406 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the video. Good information and well presened. I really like the lot of work you put into the video to share your knowledge. Script writing and visual effects are top notch and professional. Near perfect. Maybe the video lightning could be improved a bit. Maybe a difusser or a second light source (on the opposite side of your main light) would make it look more professional. Keep up the good work! 😄
@andystandys Жыл бұрын
Thanks - I appreciate your input. Funny you mentioned the lighting, and I agree with you. I have my SP sitting right on the corner of that desk, and I intentionally didn't put much light on the right side because there is a gaping hole that goes right down to the floor. (Where there is a mess of cables.) If I had more room and a more permanent video setup, I would have everything centered on a larger table.

informative video... but why use the thumbnail picture of a woman who's not involved at all? it's a little weird
@andystandys Жыл бұрын
As a small channel without many subscribers or views, I'm trying to figure out what kind of thumbnails work best. I appreciate your feedback.
@thomasmorus3406 Жыл бұрын
Great video and great conent. BTW my personal optinion regarding the thumbnails: I understand the reasoning behind the thumbnail. However I expect your target audience to be more intelligent ;-) Instead of using a generic stock face with an suprised face expression (like the clickbaity influencer trash channels) I would treat the thumbnail like the headline or cover of more serious music magazine. E.g. write the headline in the thumbnail: "SP-404: Dub workflow tutorial". Keep the coolors. Regarding images: It should refelect the content. If it is about the SP-404 -> Image of Sp-404. If it is about Dub -> Maybe add a picture related to dub. Maybe some regae instruments or musicians. Or only just the SP-404. Maybe design a fency logo and just use a headline, a SP-400 and a smaller logo as your brand identy. (e.g. see for example kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYbVe3uFa9d2hZY -> ) IMHO many youtoubers make a fool out of themself by always making a stupid, excited face expression on all thumbnails. Your content does not need a clickbaity, cheesy to sell. Someone working with the SP-404 will look for an SP-404 and tipps and ignore the face ;-)

I have hundreds of dub loops from Splice and Producer loops - I assume they will work just the same? They are perfect. Also I make some of my own using Ableton and or Reason...I just bought a new 404 mk2 last week, and just learning the ropes - I also love my MC 101 for making loops and beats.

Yep, as long as they are perfect loops they will work. The ones you use together just have to be all the same tempo, obviously.

Do they all need to be the same bpm or will the bpm sync button solve the problem of them being slightly different?

Great track/ project, I come at this from a more traditional standpoint, using playback, a mixer and guitar pedals for fx. But this is massively appealing, because the amount of gear you’d have to travel with 😂 What are your fx possibilities with this device? As in, do you setup bus sends, or add to each channel individually?
@andystandys Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. You would find this more limited than your traditional setup, that’s for sure. But for something quick, fun and portable I think it can be a nice option. There are four buses on the SP-404 MKII. If you use buses 3 and 4, ALL of the sounds being played are forced through those two buses. So, you wouldn’t really use those two buses for your strong dub effects like delays. All your drums and everything else would get the delay effect at the same time if you did. In this example I put the drums and bass through bus 2 with a reverb and put the rest of the instruments through bus 1 for my delays. But, you could choose to put your drums and bass through NIETHER bus 1 or 2, and use bus 2 for a different effect for some other samples…
@Hakucho646 ай бұрын
@@andystandys I thought you can bypass busses 3 and 4?
@andystandys6 ай бұрын
@@Hakucho64 You are right, and I didn't realize it. I just tested it. If you change a sample to be neither Bus 1 or 2 (lit up white,) it will also bypass buses 3 and 4.

If you have a camera where you can adjust the frame rate and shutter speed, you just have to set it so that it matches the refresh rate of the screen on the SP. I shoot on a Nikon Z6II and have the frame rate set to 24 fps, the shutter speed set at 1/50 and that seems to work great.
