I know this video is two years old but I have to say this is the best channel on lime mortar pointing I've come across. I've always been fascinated by this subject and you explain it so well. It would take a lifetime for someone to learn the skills that teach on this channel and I've always found it a bit confusing because it seems like a black art so thanks for taking the time for teaching this rare skill it's great that this knowledge will never be lost and people can have this great channel to refer to on this specialist craft 👍

Wish I'd seen this vid before I used a paddle mixer in a gorilla bucket last year to mix up. I've f***ked both shoulders! I didn't know I could use a mixer. Thanks for sharing your expertise. I have to finish the wall this autumn and will take on board all your tips. Thanks and keep sharing.

I’ve seen it people use a mix of both building sand and grit sand. Do you recommend using just grit? Cheers
@GMTpointingspecialistsltd2 ай бұрын
I only use sharp sand but north wales the sharp sand i use has 7 different size graind You can use a yellow building sand but never use red building sand

Hi mate, what mix would you recommend for rebedding sandstone ridge on a slate roof. Currently fixing up an old house so any advice appreciated!

@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd thanks for the reply mate. It’s not listed but is in a high wind area. The area nearby us called “Windyhills”

The ridge is just lifting off with no resistance. Mortar just crumbles. I’ve taken the majority off to re bed while I sort out the slates but there’s various different advice online about what mix to use. Thought better to ask the expert as only have a short window of good weather
@GMTpointingspecialistsltdАй бұрын
@radusguru2196 if you want to use lime nhl5 Butt you need to put a slurry mix on the back of the ridge or it might not key Or if you want just to use sand and cement do a 1:4 with sbr so it sticks Or a 1 1 5 hydrated lime mix But make sure you do a slurry mix on the back of the ridgetile no matter what mix you choose

@radusguru2196 with it crumbling sounds like lime so re use lime put a bit of white vinegar on the old mortar if it fizzies its lime

Great stuff, Glenn. 17:33 "..just take out of the mixer what you're going to use".. Q. Should I start the mixer running again once I've taken out what I need, or is it okay to switch off? If I switch it off to go and do some work, should I give it a turnover again before I take my next lot of lime? Would like to see how you tackled that wall in this video; some of my work involves a deal of cement-mortar erosion - powdery stone, troughs, uneven surfaces and ruts of different depths where I've dug out old cement. I'm still not sure what depth I'm meant to fill the ruts and valleys to? Would I fill till the lime is more or less flush with the good stone, or do I just put enough lime in to fill some of the rut but let the stone stand out? Thanks, buddy.

Once you have done a mix minimum 20 minutes switch the mixer of leave it for 10 minutes Then take what you need out Leave the rest in and mix for 1 minute leave it then When you want to take more mix out just mix it for a couple of minutes Don't over mix it as you don't want to cut down on the water evaporation in the mix If you send me some pictures of the wall on FB I can help you out with that

@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd Cheers, Glenn, appreciated. I've already done a section, looks fine but you can tell me if I'm on the right track. I'll get some pics together and send on facebook. Cheers.

Hello mate spoke on one of your other video. The repointing job ive been asked to do is they want to use white clay pit sand doug out and straight to the job mixed with sharpe is this somthing you would use as im not sure doesnt like holding water

@@kierenboimufc5940 I would 100% get them to put it in wrighting That's what they want With a 1cement 1 hydrated lime You really need 4 or 5 sand minimum or there's to much powder to sand And is a strong mix

@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd yes then to water would soak in the wall and bot be able to come out of the mortar so result in escaping from the brick ?

I've just had to block a key board warrior from commenting saying I should of used hot lime not NHL The reason I used NHL on here as it's a lower free lime content 35% I didn't use the 90% free lime as it eats away at the sand stone You need to do your research before doing a project Sorry for the rant but some people haven't got a clue
