Susan DeHart I did the same “dollar store pour” and ended with the same result. I believe my paint was too thick (ended up with cracks) and I did not get the cells I was looking for (maybe not enough silicone spray from dollar store). Overall, the painting is definitely a beginners painting.

Hi Maria... I ordered Floetrol online through Flood SA. Its quite costly - 2 lt cost R789 to deliver to my door... but they were efficient and I received my delivery in 2 days. I use Plason Glaze Coat Gloss for my pouring medium. Not sure if this is the right additive but it was recommended by Herbert Evans as Liquitex pouring medium was so expensive.

A good video that shows clearly how to mix paint for new fluid painters. It does exactly what it says it does in the title. A great video for beginners. I wish there had been more when I was starting out. I like to decant paints with tin lids because after the second or third use you get dry bits falling into your paint - unless you scrupulously clean the top indents of the tin and lid. It’s a pain. A good video for beginners. One suggestion- wouldn’t it be better to pour the white medium into the pink, rather than the other way around, so that you could keep using the same cup without washing it or throwing it away? The left over one isn’t easily recyclable otherwise. Just thinking of our planet. I daresay you thought of it when you mixed the next colour? Live and learn. Thanks for sharing.

Might have silly questions.. major rookie, vastly experimenting 😅 So it doesn't have to be a silicone oil? What if I'm using Elmer's glue as my medium? Do you know and can you help me understand resin? And what about using different ratios per each color or leaving an ingredient out of a color or two? How big of an impact will that make on the overall image produced at the end. Is there a large difference in professional grade acrylic and craft acrylic? I neeeeeed to know the secrets. PLEASE HELP! 😁

@4everisnotenough

Swefty E FYI Floetrol is $6 on Amazon. It IS the cheaper alternative but I agree w/Rick. You don't need it & if you ever decide to sell your work commercially you are going to want to ensure your piece to be archival. That just means that you are using (Artist Grade) products that will resist fading & other damage/problems inherent w/house, craft or student paints. Side note: If you want to actually see what I mean...paint a piece of paper or canvas red using craft/student paint. Completely cover 1/2 of your red paint. Make sure no sunlight can penetrate your covered side. Stick in sunlight/tape to a sunny window for about 2 weeks. Then remove covering. You'll see the difference. Some paints you won't need to even remove the covering. The paint will be obviously pink or barely existent. Karen-Seriously? Water down paint. Toss on substrate. Class Dismissed.

Hi Rick, can I eventually resin the top of a pour made like this? I thought that when u use silicone u could never resin it.
@IreneKiew
@IreneKiew 6 жыл бұрын
You're right that the resin won't bond to the painting's surface due to the silicone (that's why we use silicone molds for resin casting). From what I have seen & heard on other artists' KZbin channels, you have to clean the surface of the painting to remove the silicone before applying the resin. One artist does it with a paper towel and rubbing alcohol; another rubs baby powder or talcum powder over the painting (he says flour will work as well) and then cleans that off with a little dish soap and water.

One of my teenagers loved this so we found a fabulous place in this huge house they are in...it is dreamy and away from his six siblings...I took all kinds of supplies and sent from amazon ahead of time so disappointed for t he little ones were into computers and only the last day one came forward to do it...the 17 year old either felt sorry for me or he did it because he loved it! My granddaughter just came in and was wowed and finally she is ready to go!! After watching your mixing I made t he first really beautiful one...I"m so excited!! The mixing the glue and paint first was the trick that worked for me...then the floetrol....bam I will join your facebook and post it...Even my sister who also is an artist loved it...

Will the paint keep if too much is mixed? (Of course, placing it in a sealed container.) I thought this would be a great project for a children's group. I wanted to premix the paints to have ready for a dirty pour. Thanks!

as long as it was sealed I think it would be fine. But I wouldn't add silicone until you are ready to pour because it may or may not work properly

Thanks so much really helpful for as I am just starting out with this pour painting .Why don't you use the silicone spray on the white? I did try your dollar store pour which worked great but all I had for spray Is 10wforty which is a lubricant for mental. It seen to work ok but I see from this video that I had my paint much to thick. Dose using a heat gun or torch change the appearance of the pour?

I rarely do the same thing twice. I would experiment and keep a journal to see what works for you. Every time I have a paint pouring session I try something new.

Is the silicone always pre-mixed into your paints? I ask because in your painting videos, I see you spray a few shots into the cup you are pouring from in-between paints. Just wondering if you do both or if they are separate methods of adding the silicone.

Thank you so much Rick, your videos are always so helpful. I am confused about one thing. If I want an archival piece, will either the Golden GAC 800 or Liquitex be the thing to use? If so, do you have a preference between the two OR do you prefer something else and, if so, what is it? Also, do you always use water as a thinner? Thank you.

Why do you use glue in your mix? Does the paint need to have a binder for a specific reason or does it depend on the type of paint?

Can you store the final product in an airtight container? Can you make large batches of colors, mixed and ready to go, or is it better to mix fresh before each pour? I can just see myself wasting a lot of mixed paint if so, i.e., making too much for a piece and then having to toss it.

I have question for you. When you are mixing paint for a larger batch and not going to use all of it right away, does it matter that you added the silicone already to the batch? Will it still be as effective in creating cells? I'm new to this so it might be a crazy question.
